Unit 1 discusses the history and philosophy of Midwifery, and how the profession now works within health care systems in Canada and internationally. It also outlines midwifery’s role in developing government policies for their practice and clients, with particular attention given to disparities in health care access, and midwifery’s role in ensuring appropriate health care is accessible to all.

Unit 2 addresses the midwife’s role in a clinical setting as a primary care giver including scope of practice, competency, and organizations that regulate midwifery practice. Particular emphasis is placed on developing the practitioner-client relationship through respect, empathy, and awareness of social barriers to healthcare.

Unit 3 focuses on the midwife’s role as an educator both in the academic setting with student midwives and in the clinical setting working with clients. It discusses the development of curricula for midwifery students and current approaches to parenthood education for clients.

Unit 4 covers the importance of evidence-based practice and producing knowledge through midwifery research, with emphasis on the importance of midwives contributing to research in their field, and how to participate.

La colonne vertébrale peut être affectée par un trouble de croissance (comme une scoliose idiopathique), par une pathologie tumorale (comme une métastase de cancer du sein) ou une pathologie septique (comme une spondylodiscite). La colonne peut aussi être le siège d’une lésion traumatique (comme une burst fracture de L1). Néanmoins la toute grande majorité des pathologies de la colonne vertébrale est dégénérative. Cela signifie qu’il s’agit d’anomalies liées au vieillissement naturel ou prématuré des articulations de la colonne. La pathologie dégénérative de la colonne concerne essentiellement les disques (hernie discale, discarthrose), les facettes vertébrales (arthrose zygapophysaire) ou les articulations uncovertébrales (uncodiscarthrose cervicale). Les hernies discales ne sont qu’un événement, un incident, dans le cycle de vieillissement du disque intervertébral. C’est donc une pathologie articulaire, comme la coxarthrose, mais la proximité de la moelle et des racines fait que sa présentation clinique va au-delà d’une douleur locale et d’un enraidissement. Il y a souvent des signes neurologiques. Nous verrons dans ce chapitre et dans les suivants quelles pathologies rentrent dans ce groupe et surtout comment elles peuvent se manifester.

"How does a person experiencing anesthesia lose consciousness? Despite billions of surgeries, scientists still don’t fully understand what happens in the brain when a patient goes under. But only recently has state-of-the-art biological technology allowed researchers to probe its anatomy and connections to the rest of the brain. Francis Crick—of DNA fame—and neuroscientist Christof Koch hypothesized the claustrum to be the seat of consciousness, a conductor of sorts, orchestrating the activity of neurons in charge of higher brain functions from deep within. Now, new research from the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan appears to confirm that hypothesis. Only, instead of arousing neurons to action, the claustrum lulls them to sleep. The claustrum is both an appropriate and unfortunate name for this important part of the brain’s anatomy. This presentation provides an overview of the existing treatment available for treatment of obesity. Genetic studies have revealed that the genes contributing to development of obesity is mainly located in the brain, therefore it would be logical to tro to target the brain when pursuing drugs for the treatment of obesity. However it’s not that simple.

This presentation discusses the possibility of finding a cure for type 1 diabetes, and hereby developing a product, that maintains a normal blood glucose level without insulin treatment. In continuation of this, we’ll provide an introduction to beta cell replacement therapy based on The Edmonton Protocol, however we’ll be focusing on relying on stem cell technology rather than that of organ donor islets. Furthermore we’ll discuss how we can combine an encapsulation strategy, so we can avoid the use of immuno-suppression.
