In EARTH 801, you will develop skills in a programming language designed for visual arts and visualization while exploring Earth science topics. Unit 4 titled “Study of OA Mandates and Policies” elaborates different institutional and funders’ OA mandates. Some of these mandates have become model OA policies for similar institutions and organizations.
Unit 5 titled “Issues and Challenges of Open Access” discusses concerns, issues and challenges related to OA scholarly literature. No doubt, there is apprehension due to arrival of predatory OA journals in OA domain, with vested profiteering interest. But there are checks and balances to avoid such predatory journals. Due to OA advocacy and awareness raising efforts, OA knowledge producers have improved researchers’ perceptions in quality and recognition of OA literature. This Unit briefly discusses different metrics and performance indicators available for assessing OA scholarly literature.

In this lab, students are introduced to the difference between relative and absolute dating, using the students themselves as the material to be ordered. Initially, the students are asked to develop physical clues to put themselves in order from youngest to oldest (exposing the inferences we make unconsciously about people's ages), and this will be refined/modified using a list of current events from an appropriate historical period that more and more of the students will remember, depending on their age (among other variables). Absolute age is introduced by having the students order themselves by birth decade, year, month, and day, and comparing the absolute age order to the order worked out in the relative-dating exercise, with a discussion of dating precision and accuracy.

The Dependability Checklist is a tool to help students evaluate resources for their assessments. Students answer ten 'yes' or 'no' questions about a resource and then generate a score indicating how trustworthy or dependable that resource is. Working through the Checklist introduces students to indicators of reliability. As students become more confident in evaluating sources, they won't need to rely on the Checklist. This tool is used as part of teaching evaluation in first year units at Deakin University. It can be used as part of assessment or activities where students evaluate resources providing the dependability score.

Welcome to a short training module on digital competence frameworks for instructors. This training module aims to help instructors working in post-secondary settings to identify and compare features of four popular digital competence frameworks: T-PACK, UNESCO's ICT framework, JISC's Digital Capabilities frameworks, and the European Commission's DigCompEdu framework. A fifth digital competence framework, Flexicomp, is also described in this module- this framework was developed in partnership with instructors and learners in four European countries, and is aimed specifically at instructors working in the VET sector, and-or with vulnerable learners.
We partnered with students to create Digital Essentials, a series of online modules for students to quickly build digital skills for study and work.
The modules cover different digital capabilities for creation, communication, data, information, learning and functional skills.

A Digital Project Preservation Plan is designed to help with organizing preservation efforts for digital projects. Initially drafted as a companion guide meant to fill the gap on best methods for preserving digital scholarship or digital humanities projects, it can also be applied to digital projects outside the humanities. This preservation plan is most beneficial to those digital humanities (DH) project creators who need guidance on how to start a digital project with preservation in mind. Although the DH community has shared resources and case studies, the examples available tend to focus on DH development, and less on DH preservation. These resources are also located in disparate locations. The Digital Project Preservation Plan is a singular guide, focusing on DH preservation, as a starting point with references to more resources and related DH practices. This is a working document, available to practitioners in whole or part; ideally, it will be used in the early stages of project planning and consulted and revised regularly. The preservation infrastructure should be designed and built as a collaborative effort from the beginning of the project. As priorities, methods and technologies change, the preservation plan will need to be updated and modified accordingly.
This book has been used in humanities (history) and media courses but is applicable to any course that has digital/web project components.
