Performance Philosophy is an emerging interdisciplinary field of thought, creative practice and scholarship. The Performance Philosophy book series comprises monographs and essay collections addressing the relationship between performance and philosophy within a broad range of philosophical traditions and performance practices, including drama, theatre, performance arts, dance, art and music. The series also includes studies of the performative aspects of life and, indeed, philosophy itself. As such, the series addresses the philosophy of performance as well as performance-as-philosophy and philosophy-as-performance.

This YouTube channel hosts a series of short (about 15 min) talks and performances for the Pavlov/Tertis Project, which explores connections between music and psychology. The talks were written and delivered by Michael Domjan, Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas, who is an internationally recognized expert in conditioning and learning. Dr. Domjan also received training as a violist in the preparatory division of the Juilliard School of Music. This module has been created by Dr. Carly Johnson, Chair of the Department of Music at Alabama State University, to supplement commercial textbooks available for college-level conducting courses.  The culturally diverse images, musical scores, and videos featured in the module provide more inclusive content, representative of students from historically marginalized groups, and aid in deconstructing racial, ethnic, and gender biases often associated with the study of Western art music and with holding leadership positions in music.  The module begins with reflective questioning, identifying and examining equity barriers in Western art music, and ends with pathway resources for underrepresented students to pursue additional study beyond the conclusion of the course. Included in this module are several activities and assessments that can be used in a variety of ways, suitable for both in-person teaching or for synchronous or asynchronous online instruction.

Dance communicates ideas through movement and is an expressive art form. Students need to learn how to use their body in a safe and healthy way, whilst developing a wide-ranging movement vocabulary. The use of different dance techniques can be an effective way of building vocabulary and developing different kinds of skills and abilities. Technical dance skills can form the foundation on which to develop and enhance each individual's performance. As dance teachers, we may have a range of skills, but it isn't always possible to possess expertise in every type of dance style and technique. Having the knowledge and experience to teach African Dance forms, Jazz Dance or Hip Hop to students is a great way of introducing them to a variety of styles and can be a rich and rewarding process. However, many teachers in schools and colleges work within a Contemporary Dance style because it will have been the basis of their education and training; it is also the point of reference for this unit.

Devised theatre is a method of theatre-making in which the script or (if it is a predominantly physical work) performance score originates from collaborative, often improvisatory work by a performing ensemble. The ensemble is typically made up of actors, but other categories of theatre practitioner may also be central to this process of generative collaboration, such as visual artists, composers, and choreographers; indeed, in many instances, the contributions of collaborating artists may transcend professional specialization.

"Focus on 'Henry V'" is a peer-reviewed, multimedia, digital Open Educational Resource co-authored and co-produced by faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates on the innovative digital publishing platform Scalar. Chapters include guides to early printed editions, sources, and performance and cinematic histories of the play, as well as teaching resources and in-depth case-studies of particular scenes. All chapters include rich multimedia and audio recordings of body text and image captions. In addition to a traditional Table of Contents, the digital book allows users to navigate the materials through multiple pathways and visualizations. In this way the book offers not only a cutting-edge, renewable OER for college and K-12 teachers but also a model for maximizing the affordances of the digital medium.

In the sections of Chapter 1, we’ve included interactive learning content to test your knowledge over Theater history and production, with many knowledge checks over Theatrical Worlds, Edited by Charles Mitchell, as well as Playhouse Square theaters and productions, and other theater content. This content can be used by Theater students anywhere in the world, but will be helpful to those reading Theatrical Worlds.

In Chapter 2, there are analyses of local live performance, written by CSU Theater students and Heather Caprette. They serve as examples of exemplary work for the open assignment 2, as well as provide information about performances of interest to the public theater goers. * A Note of Caution: These analyses can not be copied by other Theater students to satisfy the requirement for an assignment in a course, but will give an idea of what a well written analysis paper looks like. Copying of these assignments to turn in as your own assignment constitutes plagiarism and academic misconduct.

Chapter 3, is an example of how a group of students working together on the recreation of a scene or small part of a play can share their ideas. The part should be less than 10% of a play. The example is being produced by Heather Caprette, MFA, but in the assignment, different students would work on various aspects of the theater production. Elements recreated include: dialogue, character design, set design, stage lighting, costume design, and sound design.

COURSE DESCRIPTION & PREREQUISITES Seminars focus on topics of general interest while developing key academic foundations (reading, information literacy, creative and critical thinking, technological literacy, and either writing or quantitative literacy). Quantitative-focused seminars integrate assignments that require the use and understanding of quantitative information/evidence.

This course will explore the parallels between dance and coding and will culminate in creating an electronic dance using basic tools from dance choreography, eDance costumes, and basic coding skills. No previous dance or coding experience is needed.

COURSE GOALS: FYS 207: ILLUMINATING THE CODE OF DANCE

Students will convert relevant information into various mathematical forms
Students will solve a problem (creating an illuminated dance) using strategies across the disciplines of dance and computer science
Students will put into practice knowledge of coding, iteration and abstraction and will be expressing themselves through choreography and dance.

This open e-book is the result of a project funded by a University of Edinburgh Student Experience Grant, Open e-Textbooks for access to music education. The project was a collaboration between Open Educational Resources Service, and staff and student interns from the Reid School of Music. As a proof-of-concept endeavour, the project aimed to explore how effectively we could convert existing course content into convenient and reusable open formats suitable for use by staff and students both within and beyond the University. The resulting e-book presents open licensed educational materials that deal with the building blocks of musical stave (sometimes known as staff) notation, a language designed to communicate about musical ideas which is in use around the world. The resources in this e-book include video lectures and their transcripts, as well as supporting text explanations, examples and illustrations. The materials introduce topics such as the organisation of discrete pitches into scales and intervals, and temporal organisation of musical sounds as duration, in rhythm and metre. These rudiments are presented through an introduction to the elements of five-line stave notation, and through critical discussion of the advantages and limitations served by notational systems in the representation and analysis of musical sounds. This serves as the basis of further explanations, to illustrate musical concepts including key, time signature, harmonisation, cadence and modulation. We anticipate that subsequent versions of this e-book will update and develop the contents and presentation of the materials, following the success of this student-led collaboration.

Introduction to compressive sensing. This course introduces the basic concepts in compressive sensing. We overview the concepts of sparsity, compressibility, and transform coding. We then review applications of sparsity in several signal processing problems such as sparse recovery, model selection, data coding, and error correction. We overview the key results in these fields, focusing primarily on both theory and algorithms for sparse recovery. We also discuss applications of compressive sensing in communications, biosensing, medical imaging, and sensor networks.

                The String Ensemble set out to find an under represented BIPOC/female composer and work that we could record and revitalize/rearrange. After sifting through project composers and works, we settled on Joseph Bolonge Le Chevalier de St. Georges, a BIPOC and underrepresented composer and his work, String Quartet No. 2, Op. 1. Prior to our project, the work was offered with no overall score and just manuscript individual parts that were somewhat difficult to read. In addition, the string virtuoso composer had some much influence on Mozart, Haydn, and the creation of the classical music genre of the sinfonia concertante. Yet, I had never even heard of his existence or influence which music textbooks do not give Joseph Bologne the proper credit to sinfonia concertante. This web app is a complete critical edition of MND, which can be viewed as plain text or in a mode with glosses appropriate to students just getting familiar with the play. It has a second mode for more advanced students with textual notes and explorations of mythology and classical allusions. A final mode for performers/experiential learners displays the text showing typographical indications of scansion and rhetoric. The app also includes an interactive mode for memorization drills. This course is designed to teach not only historical facts about music but also to encourage deeper listening to music from a variety of sources. Music Theory for the 21st–Century Classroom is an openly–licensed online college music theory textbook that is meant to take the student from the basics of reading and writing pitches and rhythms through twelve–tone technique and minimalism over the course of four semesters. This text differs from other music theory textbooks by focusing less on four–part (SATB) voiceleading and more on relating harmony to the phrase. Also, in traditional music theory textbooks, there is little emphasis on motivic analysis and analysis of melodic units smaller than the phrase. Whenever possible, examples from popular music and music from film and musical theater are included to illustrate melodic and harmonic concepts, usually within the context of the phrase. Practice exercises (with answers), homework exercises, and practice tests are included.

In my opinion, this led to students having difficulty with creating melodies, since the training they are given is typically to write a “melody” in quarter notes in the soprano voice of part writing exercises. When the assignments in those texts ask students to do more than this, the majority of the students struggle to create a melody with continuity and with appropriate placement of harmonies within a phrase because the text had not prepared them to do so.

This text provides just a small sampling of some of the various musical styles and traditions that might be found, though the skills developed in this course can be applied to any type of music.

Music is a mobile art. When people move to faraway places, whether by choice or by force, they bring their music along. Music creates a meaningful point of contact for individuals and for groups; it can encourage curiosity and foster understanding; and it can preserve a sense of identity and comfort in an unfamiliar or hostile environment. As music crosses cultural, linguistic, and political boundaries, it continually changes. While human mobility and mediation have always shaped music-making, our current era of digital connectedness introduces new creative opportunities and inspiration even as it extends concerns about issues such as copyright infringement and cultural appropriation.

The Public Domain Song Anthology by David Berger and Chuck Israels is a collection of 348 popular songs with modern and traditional harmonization for both study and performance. This open educational resource was curated by two leading jazz repertory experts and consists of songs in the US public domain. This anthology is the first of its kind and is free for students and performers to use, adapt, remix, and share. The songs, many of which are at risk of being forgotten, are free of copyright restrictions and are available in multiple formats to promote greater usage and dissemination.

Improve your ear by learning to recognize pitches in the context of a key. Use the radio buttons to decide if you want to practice in a major or a minor key, whether you want to use notes only from the tonality you chose or from all twelve notes of the chromatic scale, and whether you want to hear the scale or a cadence in that key as a reference. Choose the range (in number of octaves) from which you would like the note selected. Click the "new example" button and the scale or cadence will be played, followed by a note selected at random subject to your restrictions. It is up to you to determine the note that was played. Welcome to Resonances: Engaging Music in Its Cultural Context! Although this book is intended primarily for use in the college music appreciation classroom, it was designed with consideration for independent learners, advanced high school students, and experienced musicians. Sight-Reading for Guitar: The Keep Going Method Book and Video Series teaches guitar players from all musical backgrounds to understand, read and play modern staff notation in real time. The Keep Going Method is designed to impart the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for sight-reading with efficiency, fun and encouragement.

The team behind the series has decided to launch it early. We want to equip guitarists, who may be adjusting to new methods of teaching and learning, with a quality open resource.

Sound Reasoning is a web-based, introductory music appreciation course. It offers a new approach to music appreciation for adults, focusing on style-independent concepts. While the course concentrates primarily on Western classical and modern music, the concepts that are introduced apply to music of any style or era. The goal of "Sound Reasoning" is to equip you with questions that you may ask of any piece of music, thereby creating a richer and more comprehensive understanding of music both familiar and unfamiliar. Here are some additional features of the course. "Sound Reasoning" is completely listening based. No ability to read music is required. The course assumes little or no musical background. A minimum of terminology is invoked. Musical examples are interpolated directly into the text. The course is interactive. A "listening gallery" with exercises follows each module, so that you may practice and refine your listening skills. The modules may be studied in sequence or individually. You may easily print a .pdf of any module. "Sound Reasoning" is designed as both a stand-alone, self-paced course as well as a supplement to existing university classes.

Welcome to our Introduction to Theater – Learning Resources Spring 2018 book. The purpose of this book is to provide open educational resources for those who study Theater. It’s being authored by many helpful Cleveland State University Theater students, as well as Lisa Bernd, PhD, and Heather Caprette, MFA. In the spirit of open, it’s our desire that any alterations of the assignments be shared openly with others, at no charge, but realize we can’t control for this and there’s not always an easy way for someone to share publicly. Many authors of OER generate resources to freely help students and teachers because they realize the challenges students are facing with affording an education and educational materials. We realize this challenge and it’s our desire that these resources be provided for free.

Playback Theatre is a form of community-centered storytelling theater where the audience tells stories, which are then reflected by a company of actors and musicians. Storytelling on Screen: An Online Playback Theatre Archive and Guidebook is an open education resource consisting of a collection of full-length recordings of online Playback Theatre performances, and a 55-page explanatory guidebook. The guidebook, featuring a foreword by Playback Theatre co-founder, Jo Salas, explains the adaptation to online performances and some of the key concepts, roles, and forms involved in online Playback Theatre. The resource as a whole is suitable for a wide range of theatre students in courses such as applied theatre, theatre for social justice, improvisation, theatre appreciation, or acting. The guidebook contains hyperlinks to specific sections of the archive where students can see a given form or concept in action, allowing for a comparison of how different companies approach a given form.

Students will be able to foster an appreciation of literature and develop creative skills in public speaking and performance. Students will analyze various literary forms (poetry, novels, plays, letters, diaries, etc.) as texts for oral presentation. Students will explore oral traditions and other nonliterary sources and events as oral presentation material. Class exercises introduce vocal, physical and other speaking techniques to effectively communicate a point of view. Recommended: College-level reading and writing skills are highly recommended for success in this course.

A comprehensive introduction to the art, history and workings of the theater. Students will be given a broad and general background in theater including production elements (lights, sound, sets, costumes, make-up, etc...) of acting, theater history and criticism. Students will attend live performances, view videos of plays and write reviews of live and filmed theater. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Develop a working definition of theatre. Identify the roles of theatre practitioners. Identify the basic structure of a play script. Apply the basic criteria for theatre criticism. Identify the various theatre genres. Identify and describe the functions and use of different lighting, sound and other stage equipment. Examine the values within the range of the human experience and its impact in the expression of Theater.

This course is designed to train prospective teachers, theatre practitioners and those interested in broadening their skills in the of leading creative drama sessions within the classroom, studio or recreational facility. Class activities are designed to support curriculum development as well as promoting drama as an art and discipline. Through active learning students explore theories and concepts of Creative Drama practices that are used in the development of curriculum-based lesson plans. Creative Drama focuses on process.

Welcome to the exciting world of technical theatre. Studying this topic can lead to many different careers in several different sectors of the economy. The general skills needed for any of the careers or sectors have many things in common. Workers need to be dead-line oriented, as most productions have firm timelines that cannot be altered. Critical thinking and analysis are much needed skills. Almost every project in the field is unique and technicians and designers alike must discover the best way of reaching a project’s goal. Creative problem solving is trait successful practitioners have in common. With every project being unique, there are no guaranteed solutions to the problems that are presented. Technicians draw on their vast experience of what worked in the past that can be adapted to be a solution to the current problems. Clear communication and collaboration round out the necessary skills. No technical theatre project is ever handled by one person on their own. Collaboration with many people is the norm, and successful collaboration requires clear written and verbal communication skills.

Vocal Techniques, the course title used at many institutions, is essentially a voice class for instrumentalists, and is a required course for instrumental music education majors seeking all-level certification. Students take at least one Vocal Techniques course to learn proper singing technique along with basic pedagogy and can include teaching techniques as they apply to adolescent singers. The focus of the course is the development of the individual singing voice. This includes breathing, tone production, articulation, musicality and textual expression and understanding. Students also develop confidence in front of groups, improve their general vocal quality, and learn that a healthy voice serves them well in the general and performance classroom.

This collection uses primary sources to explore the impact of women blues performers. Digital Public Library of America Primary Source Sets are designed to help students develop their critical thinking skills and draw diverse material from libraries, archives, and museums across the United States. Each set includes an overview, ten to fifteen primary sources, links to related resources, and a teaching guide.
