This course examines traditional performances of the Arabic-speaking populations of the Middle East and North Africa. Starting with the history of the ways in which the West has discovered, translated and written about the Orient, we will consider how power and politics play roles in the production of culture, narrative and performance. Every applied ethics course requires some brief introduction, survey, or primer on ethical theory and moral decision-making. At the same time, spending too much time on argumentation and normative ethical theory can take precious course time away from the applied issues that are the focus of the course. This Applied Ethics Primer offers a concise introduction to both basic argumentation and normative ethical theory. The concepts discussed reflect the ethical theories that currently ground most professional ethics codes and debates in applied ethics. Somewhat more inclusive than many similar resources, this primer offers students a taste of the truly global history of ethics, while still being squarely focussed on providing practical tools for ethical decision-making. It is appropriate for any introductory applied ethics course.

Long Description:
Every applied ethics course requires some brief introduction to ethical theory and philosophical reasoning. Without this, applied ethics courses risk merely teaching students how to rationalize their prejudices and preferences rather than teaching them how to critically assess and engage in ethical decision-making. At the same time, spending too much time on normative ethical theory can take precious course time away from the applied issues that are the focus of the course.

The Applied Ethics Primer offers a concise intoduction to both basic argumentation and normative ethics that can be integrated into any applied ethics course. The primer provides the basic conceptual tools needed to analyze ethical positions, identify ethical problems, and assess arguments, all without assuming any prior knowledge of ethics or argumentation theory. The concepts discussed reflect the normative concepts that ground most professional ethics codes and debates in applied ethics. At the same time, the content is global, drawing on ethical theories and practices from Asia, Africa, Europe, and Indigenous traditions of North America, as well as feminist theory.

Part I introduces the ethical question—what should I do?—and how to address it. The first chapter alerts readers to the role of emotions in moral responses and the importance of reflection. This grounds a brief discussion of disagreement that leads to the second chapter on reason and argument. Here we introduce argument analysis and offer advice on how to engage in productive debates and the importance of public reasons.

Part II constitutes the main body of the primer—the ethical lenses. The first chapter focuses on consequences, presenting both the ideas of Mozi and act and rule utilitarianism. We then turn to a focus on action, with a discussion of duties based on social role, past action, and reason alone, which draw from a passage in the Bhagavad Gita, the work of W.D. Ross, and Kantian deontology, respectively. The chapter that focuses on character (and virtue) addresses both Aristotle’s eudaimonism and Buddhist ethics, particularly emphasizing the root poisons and the eightfold path. The last main chapter in this part addresses ethical approaches that focus on relations, looking at feminist ideas about personal and political relationships (with a nod to Kongfuzi), before turning to African communal ethics, captured by the concept of ubuntu, and the all my relations and seven generations teachings from the philosophies of the first nations of what settlers call North America. The part on ethical lenses is followed by a brief part that addresses a couple of important ethical ideas that cannot be captured by any given lens. Here we introduce the concept of ahimsa (or non-violence), which reflects all of the lenses equally, and the concept of rights that cannot adequately be captured by any of them.

The final part addresses self-regarding attitudes, such as rational self-interest—which is shown to ground social contract theory—as well as biases like exceptionalism and moral licensing. We end this section with a discussion of helpful heuristics and conclude the primer with an emphasis on the importance of careful reflection and argumentation for ethical decision-making.

The primer has several pedagogical tools, including a set of recommended readings at the end of the chapters that address substantive ethical theories, a set of “Stop and think” reflective excercises throughout the primer, and brief self-quizzes at the end of each chapter. The appendix includes a set of tips for reading philosophy and a critical thinking worksheet. There is also a glossary for key terms. We also provide support for how to cite the primer and how to pronounce some of the unfamiliar terms.

An introductory examination of cultural appropriation in the fine arts and popular arts of the United States, with reference to historical, literary, and other cultural developments. The primary focus is the use of cultural appropriation to communicate ideas about racial identity in ways that have served the interests of the dominant culture. Salam Dear Visitor,

This is the first edition of the “Arabic Language Through Dialogue” 1, 2 and 3 series in addition to the Iraqi Dialect through Dialogue book. The series attempts to make learning of the Arabic language more accessible and enjoyable to non-native speakers of Arabic using dialogues and communicative exercises that relate to the dialogue in each lesson. The series was made possible by partial funding and complete encouragement from the Language Acquisition Resource Center (LARC) under the directorship of Dr. Mary Ann Lyman-Hager and hosted at the San Diego State University. Dr. Ghada Osman, the director of the Center of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the San Diego State University, offered us invaluable advice and encouragement. In these books you will see the following:
1.High frequency dialect (A’miyyah) utterances are incorporated in each dialogue to give the learner a flavor of a’miyyah across the Arab world.
2.Arabic music and songs are used to teach the various dialects of the Arab world and to infuse the books with Arab culture.
3.The dialogues deal with everyday life issues from ordering food to renting a house to buying a car to talking about School and politics and social issues. All of this is done in a very easy MSA language that approximates the spoken language of educated Arabs.
4.Idiomatic expressions are incorporated in the dialogues.
5.Famous Arabic proverbs are part of every lesson in Book 3 and they come from a different región in the Arab world. We did not want to focus on one dialect as we wanted to expose learners to the 4 major Arabic dialects through songs, idiomatic expressions and high frequency words and then leave it up to the learner to decide which one he/she is most interested in. Once they decide which dialect they want to pursue, they can then plan their summer or semester abroad based on that knowledge.
6.Many games and fun activities are incorporated in each lesson.
7.Grammar is an important piece of these books but it is not the centerpiece. Learners will be exposed to all the grammatical notions and concepts needed to build their linguistic knowledge but the our focus remains on the USING the language rather than knowing ABOUT the language.

The collection of Arabic papyrus, parchment, and paper at the J. Willard Marriott Library is the largest in the U.S. It contains several parchment pieces, 770 Arabic papyrus documents, and over 1,300 Arabic paper documents. The collection was compiled by Professor Atiya and his wife who purchased the collection over several years, largely from dealers in Egypt, Beirut, and London. Most of the collection originated in Egypt and the vast majority of the material is from 700 AD to the start of Ottoman rule. The collection is not yet cataloged.

This is the second undergraduate architecture design studio, which introduces design logic and skills that enable design thinking, representation, and development. Through the lens of nano-scale machines, technologies, and phenomena, students are asked to explore techniques for describing form, space, and architecture. Exercises encourage various connotations of the "machine" and challenge students to translate conceptual strategies into more integrated design propositions through both digital and analog means.

This class was taught concurrently with course 4.125A. Some of the assignments are the same, some are different, and the sites for the final project are different. But since they were taught in tandem, it would be useful to look at both together.

Cairo is the quintessential Islamic city. Founded in 634 at the strategic head of the Nile Delta, the city evolved from an Islamic military outpost to the seat of the ambitious Fatimid caliphate which flourished between the 10th and 12th century. Its most spectacular age, however, was the Mamluk period (1250-1517), when it became the uncontested center of a resurgent Islam and acquired an architectural character that symbolized the image of the Islamic city for centuries to come.
Cairo today still shines as a cultural and political center in its three spheres of influence: the Arab world, Africa, and the Islamic world. Moreover, many of its monuments (456 registered by the 1951 Survey of the Islamic Monuments of Cairo) still stand, although they remain largely unknown to the world’s architectural community and their numbers are dwindling at an exceedingly alarming pace.

Archiving for the Future is a free training course designed to teach language documenters, activists, and researchers how to organize, arrange, and archive language documentation, revitalization, and maintenance materials and metadata in a digital repository or language archive. Then entire course can be completed in approximately 3-5 hours.

This course was developed by the staff of the Archive of the Indigenous Languages of Latin America at the University of Texas at Austin in consultation with representatives of various DELAMAN (https://www.delaman.org/) archives and other digital data repositories in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, and Cameroon.

This course is an exploration of visual art forms and their cultural connections for the student with little experience in the visual arts.
