This book provides an overview of the current debates about the nature and extent of our moral obligations to animals. Which, if any, uses of animals are morally wrong, which are morally permissible (i.e., not wrong) and why? What, if any, moral obligations do we, individually and as a society (and a global community), have towards animals and why? How should animals be treated? Why?

We will explore the most influential and most developed answers to these questions – given by philosophers, scientists, and animal advocates and their critics – to try to determine which positions are supported by the best moral reasons.

This course applies the tools of anthropology to examine biology in the age of genomics, biotechnological enterprise, biodiversity conservation, pharmaceutical bioprospecting, and synthetic biology. It examines such social concerns such as bioterrorism, genetic modification, and cloning. It offers an anthropological inquiry into how the substances and explanations of biology—ecological, organismic, cellular, molecular, genetic, informatic—are changing. It examines such artifacts as cell lines, biodiversity databases, and artificial life models, and using primary sources in biology, social studies of the life sciences, and literary and cinematic materials, and asks how we might answer Erwin Schrodinger’s 1944 question, “What Is Life?” today.

This course is an introduction to the moral challenges that arise in the design and execution of biomedical research and the development of medical interventions. A historical review segues into detailed examination of key ethical concepts and principles, as well as topics of particular concern. At the culmination of the semester, students apply their knowledge of research ethics to an ethical analysis of their MTM BioDesign projects.

“Classroom Ethics: Morality and Values for Teachers and Students” is a Salary Point Class for K-12 teachers of all subjects. The primary goal of the course is to promote good behavior, academic integrity, and social responsibility in our students. Further, the course will help our students develop their moral intelligence. The course will address a wide variety of issues related to the general topic of ethics and morality. It will touch on issues of philosophical, religious, and social values, examples of good manners and proper etiquette, the virtues of honor and honesty, as well as the California Content Standards in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. In addition to examining the development of respect, empathy, and tolerance in our students, the course will explore aspects of conflict resolution and service learning. As a fundamental component of the course, all participants will create a notebook of instructional materials and lesson plans to use in their work as teachers.

Common ethical issues are presented and are retrieved from valid sources. Local ethical issues from the Philippines are given to provide viewers specific examples of concerns.

Students examine what deepfakes are and consider the deeper civic and ethical implications of deepfake technology. In an age of easy image manipulation, this lesson fosters critical thinking skills that empower students to question how we can mitigate the impact of doctored media content. This lesson plan includes a slide deck and brainstorm sheet for classroom use.

This is a suggested course syllabus for a 100-level introductory ethics course. I have focused primarily on primary source readings when possible, and using secondary or summary readings to supplement students' understanding of the primary sources. The only exception to this general rule, however, is the readings for Immanuel Kant, as his writings are far more dense and technical, and can be very difficult for the average undergraduate to parse through. For this reason I have included only secondary and summary readings for Kant's ethics. The suggested syllabus is formatted on the assumption that the readings are primarily a springboard for class discussion, and for each week's selections I have included suggested discussion starters which correlate to that week's readings. As I continue to build on and modify this resource I plan to attach some of my Google Slides for each section, as well as editable Mid Term and Final materials, so feel free to contact me about those or simply check back.

The open resources that I drew from each have additional selections which I chose not include but may be of interest to others, particularly "Introduction to Ethics" from Lumen Learning which contains various chapters exploring specific ethical dilemmas. So I encourage anyone who finds my course helpful to explore these other resources to see what else you may want to include for your students. Students analyze an assortment of popular inventions to determine whom they are intended to benefit, who has access to them, who might be harmed by them, and who is profiting by them. Then they re-imagine the devices in a way that they believe would do more good for humanity. During the first 90-minute class period, they evaluate and discuss designs in small groups and as a class, examining their decision-making criteria. Collectively, they decide upon a definition of "ethical" that they use going forward. During the second period, students apply their new point-of-view to redesign popular inventions (on paper) and persuasively present them to the class, explaining how they meet the class standards for ethical designs. Two PowerPoint® presentations, a worksheet and grading rubric are provided.

In Climate Change, speakers give talks that boldly illuminate the nature and scale of current-day climate science, policy and ethics. They explore the economics and psychology of individual and collective action — or inaction — on climate change in order to assess the costs of our choices and opportunities for change. This class will provide the framework for how cities and communities can become smarter and more accessible with technology and more connected.

This course presents an examination of ethical issues relevant to systems-based research procedures, professional conduct, social and environmental impacts, and embedded ethics in research and professional practice in RESS based jobs. In this course, you will consider case studies of ethical issues that can arise when engaging renewable energy and sustainability systems. You will also develop an ethics case study based on your area of RESS interests. The goals of the course are to provide you with tools for analyzing ethical issues both in the line of professional duties and in consideration of the various ethical issues that face an entire sector of renewable energy and that underpin the very reasons for taking a sustainable and renewable approach.
