Students will use the free online coding program Scratch to learn the basics of coding and how to use blocks and animations to create a game. Students will create a game to find multiples of a given factor by making a character fly into the correct multiple of the given factor. The student will go through a series of coding steps to create a background, make a character fly, and create the factor and multiple game. This lesson plan was created as a result of the Girls Engaged in Math and Science, GEMS Project.

In this text, you will see information literacy examined from the perspective of students in the School of Education and the School of Information at the University of Michigan. The diversity of these perspectives contribute to new understandings and realizations as their divergent backgrounds, experiences, aspirations, and influences, both in libraries and 'in the wild', are examined in common. Their findings lend a fresh perspective to the existing body of literature on information literacy.

Students jump into learning how to spot fake news by playing a round of Factitious, the game. Next, they meet in groups to share strategies that helped them while playing the game. (A sample infographic of strategies is included, too.) Third, groups of students work together to be the first team to find all four fake news items in The Canadian Infiltration Fake News Game. 

We partnered with students to create Digital Essentials, a series of online modules for students to quickly build digital skills for study and work.
The modules cover different digital capabilities for creation, communication, data, information, learning and functional skills.
The modules are on the Pressbooks platform and include H5P content for interactivity and self-assessment. There is also a short quiz at the end of each module to check your knowledge.

Being able to conduct productive job searches is key to finding employment opportunities. Digital literacy is also a necessity for gaining employment. That’s why this course aims to provide adult basic education participants the ability to self-navigate the internet to search for relevant, reliable search results. Participants will be able to demonstrate how this increased digital literacy related to internet searching can help them successfully find relevant job opportunities.

The digital age has created the need for a new kind of literacy-a literacy that empowers news consumers to determine whether information is credible, reliable and truthful. This is not just a skill; it is a new core competency for the 21st century. So-called “fake news” is hard to spot and spreads easily, leading to disagreements over basic facts. The antidote to the growing challenges posed by this digital revolution is news literacy. This mini news literacy course includes two three-hour sessions that will teach anyone to become a more critical consumer of news.

They will read an article on community and will come away with ideas on how to be more involved in their community.

This course is about digital citizenship and its importance in using the internet. This quick and easy-to-follow module includes the four key aspects of digital citizenship and videos that contain further information on those key aspects. This resource can be utilized as a learning tool for both teachers and middle school-aged/high school-aged learners who are directly interacting with or new to how the internet works. This resource can also be utilized as a source to learn and practice digital citizenship together in the classroom.

The following unit offers multiple entry points into developing an understanding of media literacy. The unit framework and primary sources can be integrated into classrooms of grades 4-12. Each lesson has student objectives that can be accomplished within 40 minute periods over the course of several weeks. A midpoint writing assessment, whole class capstone debate, and final independentwriting assessment are included. Support materials are integrated into the lessons, and the primary source document pages can be found at the end of the unit guide.
