These lesson plans and activities were developed by Janine Darragh, Gina Petrie, and Stan Pichinevskiy and were previously located on the Reaching for English app. Created for K-12 English teachers in Nicaragua, the materials may be used and adapted for any country's specific context and needs. 

* This is intended to be used for learners in G1 and up.  This module may fit into a larger course to provide a broader content for the module as it is openly and freely shared.  ASL (American Sign Language) is a visual language. Instead of verbal language, you use your body such as your hands and facial expressions.  You can actually use ASL to communicate whenever you like, use it like your daily conversations.

This is a website that teaches about the Arabic alphabet using a pyramid of colors. It introduces how to make the different shapes of the letters via a system of letters holding 'hands'. The website contains a number of products available, including magnetic letters, puzzles, and interactive CD-ROMs. Geared towards children, the products can also be used for adults looking for a different way to learn the Arabic alphabet.

During the Spring 2020 semester, I taught this wonderful group of ESL learners in the classroom and on Zoom after the pandemic hit. This OER is a collection of resources, teaching ideas, and student artifacts about that experience. I hope it helps you. Acceso is a complete, interactive curriculum for intermediate-level learners of Spanish. The materials on the site are provided freely to the public and are intended as a replacement for commercial textbooks, which are generally ill-suited to the learning outcomes now considered crucial to successful language study. These materials are supplemented by an online workbook built on the MySpanishLab platform of Pearson Education, Inc., as well as detailed lesson plans, rubrics for the evaluation of student work, and reliable instruments for measuring student progress and learning outcomes. This website hosts many examples of poetry from the jahiliyyah period to the present in an attempt to create a comprehensive diwan of Arabic poetry. Some poems have an audio component. Users can browse poetry by time period, by audio file, by author's name, or by custom search. The website is also in English and there are many poems that have been translated into English, although some poems that are on the website in English are not on the website in Arabic and vice versa. Users can submit poetry to the website via a submission system.

The purpose of this course is to examine the African American experience in the United States from 1863 to the present. Prominent themes include the end of the Civil War and the beginning of Reconstruction; African Americans' urbanization experiences; the development of the modern civil rights movement and its aftermath; and the thought and leadership of Booker T. Washington, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X. WARNING: Some of the lectures in this course contain graphic content and/or adult language that some users may find disturbing.

This SALT Interpretation Pack has been designed as a resource for educators and students as they explore the themes of the Ahmet Öğüt "Across the Slope" exhibition at SALT Beyoğlu in Istanbul, Turkey. Designed for use in high school classrooms, its contents include activities, multimedia resources, terminology and opportunities for discussion. Educators are encouraged to adapt, shape and build upon these materials to best meet the needs of their students and teaching curricula.

"Across the Slope" was first exhibited at Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona, in 2008. An installation of a modified Seat 131 (the Fiat 131 Mirafiori model produced in Spain) hovering over a man-made slope, "Across the Slope" responds to the dream of an emerging working class. When, in the 1970s, Fiat began licensing automobile production to manufacturers in Turkey, Spain and Morocco, car prices in these countries dropped. Cars were no longer luxury items. They became affordable consumer products—and symbols of a “modern,” Western lifestyle. Though modification of the Fiat was common, as Öğüt demonstrates, no matter how advanced or decorative the modifications, a car’s capacity remains the same: “A slope is always a slope, and it is always possible for a car to get stuck on one.”
