Deb Baker created this after consulting with faculty, librarians, and colleagues from around the country. The idea was to create a practical tool for assessing information literacy that anyone could use, was easy to norm, and focused on what students could do and where research instruction could be improved to increase students' information literacy. This rubric can help improve student success and information literacy learning outcomes in research assignments for any course. Used early in the semester it can serve as a diagnostic tool for supporting student researchers in developing the skills and habits of mind needed to successfully find and use information to answer a question, support a thesis, or solve a problem. Students could even use it to self-assess.

Introduction to GIS Using ArcExplorer and Brooklyn Data Sets

To learn ArcExplorer GIS, students perform these four exercises using data sets of Brooklyn and water quality data collected at various locations in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Through these exercises, the students gain an understanding of how GIS works and what can be done. Ideally, the students should collect the water data and locate the sampling sites using a GPS. If lab time is limited, water data and site locations can be provided. Combining field data with existing data sets helps make the GIS applications more understandable and relevant to the students. As a final product, students create a map using a variety of GIS data layers. They also examine spatial patterns and use GIS to generate questions and hypotheses. Uses online and/or real-time data Addresses student fear of quantitative aspect and/or inadequate quantitative skills

This new publication by UNESCO is a timely resource and highly topical subject for all those who practice or teach journalism in this Digital Age. UNESCO's new handbook is an essential addition to teaching syllabi for all journalism educators, as well as practising journalists and editors who are interested in information, how we share it and how we use it. It is mission critical that those who practice journalism understand and report on the new threats to trusted information. Political parties, health professionals, business people, scientists, election monitors and others will also find the handbook useful in navigating the information disorder. Written by experts in the fight against disinformation, this handbook explores the very nature of journalism - with modules on why trust matters; thinking critically about how digital technology and social platforms are conduits of the information disorder; fighting back against disinformation and misinformation through media and information literacy; fact-checking 101; social media verification and combating online abuse. The seven individual modules are available online to download that enables readers to develop their own course relevant to their media environment.
This handbook is also useful for the library and information science professionals, students, and LIS educators for understanding the different dimensions of fake news and disinformation.
