This book stems from the collected transcripts of what is now a fifteen-year inquiry into the implications of ayahuasca in the realms of Western culture and modern medicine.

ABOUT THE FILM

Amid the giant ferns and hummingbirds of the Peruvian jungle stands Takiwasi, a treatment center where ancient Amazonian medicines are being used to detox Western drug addicts. The man who runs it is Dr. Jacques Mabit, a French M.D. who has spent decades working hand-in-hand with curanderos, Amazonian traditional doctors. At the center of his practice is a brew called ayahuasca, Quechua for ‘vine of the souls’.

Far away, in the worst drug ghetto in North America, the most recognized specialist in addiction is at the end of his rope. Dr. Gabor Maté has spent a frustrating decade dealing with substance abuse and a failed medical system, one that treats addiction as a choice rather than a result. He hears of ayahuasca, which, they say, can do in one night what may take years of traditional therapy. Dr. Maté is intrigued by this plant remedy and its potential.

We follow Maté as he visits Jacques Mabit in the Amazon, as well as the leading scientists testing what ayahuasca actually does in the brain. Inspired, he returns home to create an underground treatment program. Working with a band of talented facilitators, using the techniques of ayahuasca shamanism, Mate’s immersive psychotherapy program finds new dimensions.

The film is a conversation about medicine and healing, at the unlikely frontier where people are working to bridge the gap between the secrets of the deep Amazonian forest and the fractured modern world.

This curriculum explores the experiences and challenges of transracial adoptive families with the goal of improving the quality of services and supports provided to them. In addition, there is a growing subset of transracial adoptive families who choose to maintain contact with their child's birth family. Very little information exists to help these families or their child welfare workers understand the bumpy terrain of openness. This curriculum fills some of the many gaps in knowledge and practice. It includes summaries of transracial adoption literature, a theoretical discussion on normative development in transracial adoptive families, practice-oriented information including discussion questions and exercises, case vignettes, worker guidance, a self-assessment tool, and findings from the in-depth qualitative study of 12 transracial adoptive families in California conducted as part of this project. Findings themes include: the complicated factors involved in choosing transracial adoption; how the children and youth understand the meaning of their adoption; issues around the choice to maintain contact with the adopted child's birth family, the role of the contact, and the vulnerability of contact arrangements; the role of race in family life and development, negotiating different cultural worlds, and developmental changes; and the role of services and supports prior to and following adoption. Identity is complicated, and changes depending on who you are and where you are. In our country, identity is directly tied to power and some are afforded privileges and others have disadvantages. This course will study identity as a social construct, and will go into further depth on race. Students will study the complications and nuances that go into the formation of identity and race, historical injustices and responses tied to it. We will study redlining, and a specific chapter of history, the South Bronx in the 1960’s. Rap music is currently the most successful music genre, even having small ripples in the country music world. Its origins, often overlooked due to the multi-faceted nature of the music, is a culture with a rich history rooted in social justice, giving a voice to the voices that were silenced. Its origins in the South Bronx, and its usage as a platform in response to social inequity, is often overlooked. Rap is a platform used worldwide to express a specific message. However, its role in academia, and in music in general, is often polarizing. We will do a specific study in rap as a form of response to systemic racism. By interacting with this curriculum, students engage in ethical reflection, in a safe space, finding a platform for their voice, learning content that’s relevant to current day. They will engage in informed conversations about race and equity, producing creative and analytical writing, while significantly improving their analytical reading and writing skills.

Since 2011, the journal Hybrid Pedagogy has published over 400 articles from more than 200 authors focused in and around the emerging field of critical digital pedagogy. A selection of those articles are gathered here. This is the first peer-reviewed book centered on the theory and practice of critical digital pedagogy.

Long Description:
The work of teachers is not just to teach. We are also responsible for the basic needs of students — helping students eat and live, and also helping them find the tools they need to reflect on the present moment. This is in keeping with Freire’s insistence that critical pedagogy be focused on helping students read their world; but more and more, we must together reckon with that world. Teaching must be an act of imagination, hope, and possibility. Education must be a practice done with hearts as much as heads, with hands as much as books. Care has to be at the center of this work.

For the past ten years, the journal Hybrid Pedagogy has worked to help craft a theory of teaching and learning in and around digital spaces, not by imagining what that work might look like, but by doing, asking after, changing, and doing again. Since 2011, Hybrid Pedagogy has published over 400 articles from more than 200 authors focused in and around the emerging field of critical digital pedagogy. A selection of those articles are gathered here.

This is the first peer-reviewed publication centered on the theory and practice of critical digital pedagogy. The collection represents a wide cross-section of both academic and non-academic culture and features articles by women, Black people, indigenous people, Chicanx and Latinx writers, disabled people, queer people, and other underrepresented populations. The goal is to provide evidence for the extraordinary work being done by teachers, librarians, instructional designers, graduate students, technologists, and more — work which advances the study and the praxis of critical digital pedagogy.
