Since we live in an urban environment with many trees, shrubs, and flower plantings this course is designed so that each student will always be able to walk down the street and have some familiarity with their environs. To that end, each student will learn to identify approximately 50-60 trees and shrubs and know them by their common name, scientific name and family, as well as some annuals and perennials commonly used as bedding plants. Students will learn some basic the botanical concepts, which are used in, plant identification, such as botanical structural features used in phylogeny and taxonomy of plants. In addition to this, students will get an overview of the ecological and economic aspects specific to urban botany.

"Trees support so much life on Earth – but one important component might easily be overlooked. The phyllosphere – the aerial surfaces of plants, including leaves – is a microbial habitat for diverse microorganisms. Phyllosphere bacteria play key roles in plant health, human health, and ecosystem function, but unfortunately, not much is known about how plants and their associated microbes influence each other. A recent study evaluated this relationship in a diverse neotropical forest. Using shotgun metagenomics, researchers found that the metabolic functions of phyllosphere microbes varied based on their tree hosts. While overall there was low variability in plant-associated microbes, suggesting that certain microbes form a “core microbiota” for neotropical trees, bacterial metabolism and membrane transport functions varied between plant species..."

"The transcription factor Nrf2 plays paradoxical roles in cancer biology. Transient Nrf2 activation can protect against cancer development, but permanent Nrf2 activation promotes progression and treatment resistance. Persistent activation can be triggered by Keap1-inactivating mutations that cause Nrf2 nuclear accumulation and/or by mutations in the ETGE and DLG motifs of Nrf2, which are important regions for Nrf2–Keap1 interaction. Epigenetic silencing of Keap1 and disruption of the Nrf2–Keap1 interaction by other proteins can also aberrantly activate Nrf2. Given the detrimental effects of excessive activation, pharmacologically balancing Nrf2 activity is a promising avenue for cancer treatment. Numerous Nrf2 activators have been discovered or developed, such as the synthetic compound oltipraz (OPZ) and the plant-derived compound curcumin (CUR). In general, Nrf2 activators can promote the functions of antioxidants, phase II detoxification factors, and transducers..."

In forested areas, students are often intrigued by mysterious sticks covered in carved tunnels–but students often think the patterns were made by human artists or termites. After students complete this activity, they’ll have the skills to identify bark beetle galleries, to make explanations about the patterns of beetle galleries, and to interpret what these tracks tell us about the life history of the organisms that made them.

In an optional discussion, students can consider outbreak levels of bark beetles that cause the death of many trees, make arguments based on evidence about possible effects on ecosystems, then brainstorm and critique possible management strategies. An optional extension for investigating student questions about bark beetles is also included.

The title "Bayeux Tapestry" (1066-82) is a bit of a misnomer—the textile is embroidered wool on linen, and not actually a woven tapestry. The wool was dyed using the plants Woad, Madder, and Rocket. The linen canvas measures 20 inches in height by 230 feet in length (50 cm x 70 m), and supports the narrative embroidery that tells of the Norman invasion of England—though very much from the Norman perspective. The tapestry depicts Duke William of Normandy's conquest of Harold Godwinson—England's new and ill-fated King. The conquest is portrayed as fully justified, and Harold is represented as an opportunist who broke his oaths to Edward the Confessor, former King of England, and to William himself. Although first known as William the "Bastard" (he was the illegitimate son of Robert the Magnificent and Herleva of Falaise), a name change accompanied his military success: he became known as William the “Conqueror." The Norman conquest is a key turning point in Western history, and the English language still reflects this dominance of French over Saxon culture.

Download this complete set of lessons for an elementary, NGSS-aligned inquiry that foregrounds engineering practices. During the days that are supported by this investigation, students observe flowers on their 14 to 16 day old Fast Plants along with bee structures, learning to connect how the shape of a structure is related to its function. Then, students make and/or use bee sticks to conduct pollination. Finally, students look closely at how pollen is carried on bee bodies and where pollen moves within the flower as concrete examples of the relationship between structure and function. Then, students have the opportunity to use a wide variety of materials to design a solution to a problem (no bees). The solution will be a simple model that mimics the function of a bee in pollinating plants.Complete kits are available from Carolina Biological for this investigation, or everything to grow Fast Plants can be built or obtained locally, using the instructions available on the Fast Plants website. This stand-alone inquiry is a subset of lessons from a comprehensive life cycle unit that is NGSS-aligned, titled "Investigating Plants Needs with Wisconsin Fast Plants" (also available in the Fast Plants digital library).

"Plants lack the nervous system of animals and are usually firmly rooted in the ground, making it easy to think of them as being unaware of the world around them. But evidence suggests that plants can indeed sense and actively respond to their environment. When under attack by microbial pathogens, some plants have been shown to recruit beneficial microbes to aid in their defense. A recent study uncovered this phenomenon in tangerine trees infected with the fungus that causes melanose, one of the most destructive diseases of citrus plants worldwide. Researchers identified the microorganisms living on infected and uninfected leaves with both culture-based and DNA sequencing techniques. They found that the infected and uninfected leaves hosted distinct microbial communities, with the microbes occupying infected leaves having beneficial and antifungal characteristics..."
