Bananagrams Impromptu Lesson Handout

Public speaking—and especially impromptu speaking—often ranks among adults’ top fears. Impromptu speaking with Bananagrams is one way I attempt to “lower the stakes” of on-the-fly speaking. To start this activity, students are placed into groups to practice first with a smaller audience. Everyone in the group draws a random Bananagrams letter tile. Using whatever word comes to mind first (a noun, verb, or adjective), they must give an impromptu speech to their small group, inspired by that single letter. Each round adds more letters until students can form a 5-letter word. As the letters change, the topics change. After practicing in this way, groups rejoin the entire class, starting fresh with a new letter tile. This activity can be expanded in many ways, thanks to the tiles, which make this activity flexible and adaptable. Ultimately, this activity aims to make students more comfortable with impromptu speaking; the single letter gives them some control over the impromptu topic before moving on to a fully written prompt.

Public affairs writing is the term used for publications written with the need of expressing opinions, ideas or concerns to a targeted audience. It is also used simply as a source of informing. Some common forms of public affairs writing include letters to the newspaper editor, letters to the government official, or e-mails and blogs. The content is written with the goal to inform or persuade the audience.

In this assignment, students create a blog in Wordpress following instructions. Each week, each student will create a blog. Also, each week a couple of student blogs will be demonstrated in class and peer-reviewed using the assessment rubric included. After peer review, the instructor will re-examine the completed peer reviews in an attempt to provide calibration and give additional expert feedback. At this point, the student will receive both peer as well as instructor feedback and have the opportunity to resubmit the work prior to beginning the final project. This provides the opportunity for the student to earn a better grade as well as have a component of the final project prepared.
