The Art of the Probable: Literature and Probability

"The Art of the Probable" addresses the history of scientific ideas, in particular the emergence and development of mathematical probability. But it is neither meant to be a history of the exact sciences per se nor an annex to, say, the Course 6 curriculum in probability and statistics. Rather, our objective is to focus on the formal, thematic, and rhetorical features that imaginative literature shares with texts in the history of probability. These shared issues include (but are not limited to): the attempt to quantify or otherwise explain the presence of chance, risk, and contingency in everyday life; the deduction of causes for phenomena that are knowable only in their effects; and, above all, the question of what it means to think and act rationally in an uncertain world.
Our course therefore aims to broaden students' appreciation for and understanding of how literature interacts with – both reflecting upon and contributing to – the scientific understanding of the world. We are just as centrally committed to encouraging students to regard imaginative literature as a unique contribution to knowledge in its own right, and to see literary works of art as objects that demand and richly repay close critical analysis. It is our hope that the course will serve students well if they elect to pursue further work in Literature or other discipline in SHASS, and also enrich or complement their understanding of probability and statistics in other scientific and engineering subjects they elect to take.

"Dietary fiber is an important part of a healthy diet, but how it interacts with our gut microbiome and the mechanisms underlying its benefits are poorly understood in humans. A recent exploratory trial examined how two structurally distinct purified fibers affected adults with excess weight. One of the dietary fibers, arabinoxylan (AX), was fermentable by the microbiome, while the second, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), was not fermentable. An innovative technique called biorthogonal non-canonical amino acid tagging (BONCAT) was also used to identify specific microbes involved in AX fermentation. AX supplementation increased satiety after a meal compared to non-fermentable MCC. Using machine learning models, these effects on satiety could be predicted by BONCAT identified microbes that fermented AX. AX also attenuated insulin resistance relative to MCC, but the effects were not linked to the microbiome..."

First Grade Elementary Science and Integrates Subjects-Sky Explorers

The First Grade Elementary Framework for Science and Integrated Subjects, Sky Explorers uses observation of the sun and moon in the sky as a phenomena for exploring patterns of objects in the sky.  It is part of Elementary Framework for Science and Integrated Subjects project, a statewide Clime Time collaboration among ESD 123, ESD 105, North Central ESD, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Development of the resources is in response to a need for research- based science lessons for elementary teachers that are integrated with English language arts, mathematics and other subjects such as social studies. The template for Elementary Science and Integrated Subjects  can serve as an organized, coherent and research-based roadmap for teachers in the development of their own NGSS aligned science lessons.  Lessons can also be useful for classrooms that have no adopted curriculum as well as to serve as enhancements for  current science curriculum. The EFSIS project brings together grade level teams of teachers to develop lessons or suites of lessons that are 1) pnenomena based, focused on grade level Performance Expectations, and 2) leverage ELA and Mathematics Washington State Learning Standards.

Here Comes the Hurricane! Saving Lives through Logical Reasoning and Computer Science

Students use a hurricane tracking map to measure the distance from a specific latitude and longitude location of the eye of a hurricane to a city. Then they use the map's scale factor to convert the distance to miles. They also apply the distance formula by creating an x-y coordinate plane on the map. Students are challenged to analyze what data might be used by computer science engineers to write code that generates hurricane tracking models. Then students analyze a MATLAB® computer code that uses the distance formula repetitively to generate a table of data that tracks a hurricane at specific time intervals. Students come to realize that using a computer program to generate the calculations (instead of by hand) is very advantageous for a dynamic situation like tracking storm movements. Their inspection of some MATLAB code helps them understand how it communicates what to do using mathematical formulas, logical instructions and repeated tasks. They also conclude that the example program is too simplistic to really be a useful tool; useful computer model tools must necessarily be much more complex.

"People with diabetes who require basal insulin to achieve blood glucose control can be at risk of hypoglycaemia, where blood glucose levels drop too low. In randomised clinical trials (or RCTs), use of second-generation basal insulin analogues, such as insulin glargine 300 units/mL (known as glargine 300) and insulin degludec, results in similar glycated haemoglobin reductions compared with first-generation basal insulin analogues, such as glargine 100 and insulin detemir, but with less hypoglycaemia. However, it is not known whether these results translate directly to routine clinical practice, as RCTs often apply strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, meaning that they may not be generalisable to real-life situations. Electronic medical records are a source of rich real-world data, but using them to make comparisons between different treatments can be difficult because results might be biased by confounding data, something that the randomisation in RCTs is designed to minimise..."
