Furniture making is in many ways like bridge building, connections holding posts apart with spans to support a deck. Many architects have tried their hand at furniture design, Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Aalto, Saarinen, Le Corbusier, and Gerhy.
We will review the history of furniture making in America with a visit to the Decorative Arts Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and have Cambridge artist/craftsman Mitch Ryerson show us his work and talk about design process. Students will learn traditional woodworking techniques beginning with the use of hand tools, power tools and finally woodworking machines.
Students will build a single piece of furniture of an original design that must support someone weighing 185 lbs. sitting on it 12 inches off the ground made primarily of wood. Students should expect to spend approximately 80 hours in the shop outside of class time.
Preregistered architecture students will get first priority but first meeting attendance is mandatory. Twelve student maximum, no exceptions.

This course is an intensive introduction to architectural design tools and process, and is taught through a series of short exercises. The conceptual basis of each exercise is in the interrogation of the geometric principles that lie at the core of each skill. Skills covered in this course range from techniques of hand drafting, to generation of 3D computer models, physical model-building, sketching, and diagramming. Weekly lectures and pin-ups address the conventions associated with modes of architectural representation and their capacity to convey ideas. This course is tailored and offered only to first-year M.Arch students.

Hexagonal Pattern of Beehives

The goal of this task is to use geometry study the structure of beehives. Beehives have a tremendous simplicity as they are constructed entirely of small, equally sized walls. In order to as useful as possible for the hive, the goal should be to create the largest possible volume using the least amount of materials. In other words, the ratio of the volume of each cell to its surface area needs to be maximized. This then reduces to maximizing the ratio of the surface area of the cell shape to its perimeter.

Explore landscape architecture construction materials, methods, and implementation practices through an interactive and simulated environment. Launch the link to view the desktop version or use a virtual reality device. The user can select a particular construction element to view real-life construction videos, 2D construction drawings, and construction phases through 3D representations. Be sure and notice the stormwater drainage animation located at the center of the courtyard with realistic sounds of rain and thunder. Videos and 2D construction drawings combined with the VR environment will allow users to get a realistic experience without physically being at a specific site.

"Indoor microbes can release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but how environmental factors and microbial community composition impact microbial VOC emissions is unclear. To learn more, researchers recently subjected drywall and carpet to different equilibrium relative humidity levels and quantified microbial communities and microbial VOC emissions. Fungus grew in dusty carpet when the humidity was >75% and in inoculated painted drywall when the humidity was >85%. The dust sample collection site and the material type significantly affected the fungal and bacterial species compositions. In dusty carpet, increased humidity was associated with decreased microbial species diversity. Abundant VOCs were likely released from the materials and dust themselves, but some microbial VOCs, such as C₁₀10H₁₆H⁺ (monoterpenes) and C₂H₆SH⁺ (dimethyl sulfide and ethanethiol), were released from microbes that grew in dusty carpet. At 95% humidity, dusty carpet produced 5..."

Students conduct an experiment to determine how varying the composition of a construction material affects its strength. They make several adobe bricks with differing percentages of sand, soil, fibrous material and water. They test the bricks for strength by dropping them onto a concrete surface from progressively greater heights. Students graph the experiment results and use what they learn to design their own special mix that maximizes the bricks' strength. During the course of the experiment, students learn about variables (independent, dependent, control) and the steps of the engineering design process.
