This item is Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activity for high school physics that asks learners to construct a flashlight using only broken and salvaged parts. In the opening scenario, a group of students are lost in a fully dark cave. One flashlight breaks in a fall and the battery dies in the other. Students have a time limit to figure out how to make the circuit work with only "salvage" items provided for the lesson. <b><i>SEE RELATED MATERIALS</b> for a link to the student materials that accompany this lesson plan (includes scene script and rubric for problem solving).</i> CASES Online is a growing collection of inquiry-based lessons developed to explore the science behind real-world problems. This internet-based project for Grades 6-12 taps into real-time data as the framework for a student investigation of tsunami phenomena. First, students look at historical information on five tsunamis, then interactively explore the science behind tsunamis and wave behavior. Next, students will access and interpret existing data from the highly destructive 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Finally, students take on roles as scientists to develop a global tsunami preparedness plan based on a budget. They must support their ideas with evidence from reliable data and present arguments based upon their studies. Included are detailed project instructions, teacher's guide, reference material, and a student discussion forum. A cooperative learning strategy has been developed to help first-year tertiary students overcome common misconceptions in mechanics. In this Conceptual Understanding Programme (CUP), students work on exercises alone, then in threes and finally discuss their views in the whole class. This process encourages students to actively think about and modify their views and it results in a high level of participation and satisfaction. The strategy can be implemented without major changes to a teaching programme. (less)

This study examines a course in which students use two writing activities and collaborative group activities to examine the conceptual structure of the calculus-based introductory Physics course. Students are presented with two alternative frameworks; pre-Galilean Physics and Newtonian Physics. The idea of the course design is that students would at first view the frameworks almost in a theatrical sense as a view of a drama involving a conflict of actors;Aristotle, Galileo, Newton and others occurring a long time ago. As participants passing through a series of interventions, the students become aware that the frameworks relate concepts from different parts of the course and learn to evaluate the two alternative frameworks. They develop a scientific mindset changing their outlook on the course material from the viewpoint that it consists of a tool kit of assorted practices, classified according to problem type, to the viewpoint that it comprises a connected structure of concepts. In a climate where teachers feel de-professionalized at the hands of regulations, testing, and politics, it is vital that teachers become empowered both in their own teaching and as agents of change. This physics education research study investigates the “Streamline to Mastery” professional development program, in which the teachers design professional development opportunities for themselves and for fellow teachers. The research reported here describes the process of teacher professional growth through changes in roles and identities. Videos, emails, and interviews were analyzed to glean insight into practice and participation shifts as these physical science teachers formed a community and engaged in their own classroom research. Implications for the role of PER in teacher professional development and teacher preparation will be discussed. (less)

Technology-rich student-centered classrooms such as SCALE-UP and TEAL are designed to actively engage students. We examine what happens when instructors adopt the classroom but not the pedagogy that goes with it. We measure the effect of using socio-technological spaces on students’ conceptual change and compare learning gains made in groups using different pedagogies (active learning vs. conventional instruction). We also correlate instructors’ self-reported instructional approach (teacher-centered, student-centered) with their classes’ normalized FCI gains. We find that technology-rich spaces are only effective when implemented with studentcentered active pedagogies. In their absence, the technology-rich classroom is not significantly different from conventional teacher-centered classrooms. We also find that instructors’ self-reported perception of studentcenteredness accounts for a large fraction of the variance (r2=0.83) in their class’ average normalized gain. Adopting student-centered pedagogies appears to be a necessary condition for the effective use of technology-rich spaces. However, adopting a new pedagogy seems more difficult than adopting new technology. (less)
