The Adoption of Open Educational Resources by One Community College Math Department

The high cost of textbooks is of concern not only to college students but also to society as a whole. Open textbooks promise the same educational benefits as traditional textbooks; however, their efficacy remains largely untested. We report on one community college’s adoption of a collection of open resources across five different mathematics classes. During the 2012 fall semester, 2,043 students in five different courses used these open access resources. We present a comparison between the previous two years in terms of the number of students who withdrew from the courses and the number that completed the courses with a C grade or better. Our analysis suggests that while there was likely no change in these educational outcomes, students who have access to open access materials collectively saved a significant amount of money. Students and faculty were surveyed as to their perceptions of these materials and the results were generally favorable.

This resource aims to provide a space for you to consider the potential impact of the Open Educational Resources (OER) movement on your approaches to teaching and learning. Its eleven different sections can accumulate into a 33 hour 'course'.

Each section will suggest a number of possible sources and we hope that you will take advantage of the comments feature at the bottom of each section's page. We believe that the sharing of thoughts, reactions and perspectives can lead to a rich and recursive experience that can benefit each user of the resource.

The eleven (approximately 3-hour long) activity-based sessions cover issues related to identifying, locating, releasing and putting OERs into your curricula; understanding the concept of “openness”; as well as pedagogical (or, within the remit of this course, "anarchogogical") issues around student engagement and in particular innovative assessment. In their broadest sense, the resources (and their resultant skills, ideas and activities) should also encourage 'reflection' on the research and practice of the working lives of teaching professionals. This text, originally by K. Kuttler, has been redesigned by the Lyryx editorial team as a first course in linear algebra for science and engineering students who have an understanding of basic algebra.
All major topics of linear algebra are available in detail, as well as proofs of important theorems. In addition, connections to topics covered in advanced courses are introduced. The text is designed in a modular fashion to maximize flexibility and facilitate adaptation to a given course outline and student profile.
Each chapter begins with a list of student learning outcomes, and examples and diagrams are given throughout the text to reinforce ideas and provide guidance on how to approach various problems. Suggested exercises are included at the end of each section, with selected answers at the end of the text.
Lyryx develops and supports open texts, with editorial services to adapt the text for each particular course. In addition, Lyryx provides content-specific formative online assessment, a wide variety of supplements, and in-house support available 7 days/week for both students and instructors.

How to Search for Openly Licensed Educational Resources

The growing body of online educational resources is helping to create universal access to language education. This is a good thing. Use this introductory guide to find open resources for your classroom. The OER ecosystem works best when everybody contributes content. Consider sharing your own. Educators often supplement foreign language textbooks. Perhaps your students need more grammar, authentic L2 materials, or listening practice exercises. Go to an open content search page. For example, Creative Commons offers a system of open licensing which enables resource sharing. Their CC search page is a great place to start. However, finding openly licensed educational resources (OER)—which can be edited, built upon, and shared without copyright restrictions—isnʼt always easy.
