This course closely examines a coherent set of short texts and/or visual works. The selections may be the shorter works of one or more authors (poems, short stories or novellas), or short films and other visual media. Additionally, we will focus on formal issues and thematic meditations around the title of the course "Staying Alive." Content varies from semester to semester.

This lab will allow students to fingerspell with each other and work on their receptive skills. There is also a fun spy game for the students so they can also work on their conversational skills.

This article provides summaries and links to nonfiction science articles for students in grades K-5.

This series of books is focused on women of early Islam, including Zaynab, Safia, Aisha, and others. These short stories are simplified for young adults, and are fully voweled. The stories are taken from Islamic canon and reshaped to appeal to young readers. They are available for free download.

Through this activity students created some storybooks in a collaborative way using technology and writing apps.

The unit has two parts. In each, students dive into inquiry to answer the compelling questions:

1. Who are some of our closest tribal neighbors, and what have they been their lifeways since time immemorial?
2. Why do people explore, and how does this lead to expansion?

Part 1 is focused on the examination of the northwest and some of the original inhabitants. Through these questions students will learn about the culture of some of their closest tribal neighbors, the Spokane Indians. The final project for Part 1 is a cultural investigation display, in which students will show what they know about the culture of the Spokane Tribe.

In Part 2, Students will also learn about forces that brought change to the northwest: fur trade era and exploration. Students will ultimately learn about the Corps of Discovery and the Oregon Trail and know the impact each had on the west. Students will finish Part 2 with a timeline activity that will reflect choice and build upon student strengths according to their skill set.

Finally, a lesson on a Tribe of the Columbia Plateau is offered as an extension, but it is strongly recommended that students get to experience this lesson.

Note that the emphasis here is on the Spokane Tribe as one of our closest tribal neighbors. In no way is this an exhaustive study nor should the tribal cultures be generalized to other tribes of the region. We understand that each tribe in our region and North America was and continues to be unique in its culture, practices, lifeways, and traditions.

Students will hold a conversation reflecting on their Thanksgiving Break in the target language. Students will focus on both active and receptive fingerspelling.  

This website provides information on hundreds of Arabic books and documents, from 1,001 nights to the Qur'an to many other medieval Arabic scripts and texts. 1,001 nights includes an audio component. Users can search the site for a particular author or document, or they can search by category. The site is all in Arabic.

Students will be exposed to various severe weather warnings from Japan. They will then practice telling stories using vocabulary for events and days off.
