This book takes an inductive, inclusive approach to business communication. It has the following goals:

To meet the needs of a diverse student population, including English language learners, students from diverse cultural backgrounds, mature students, and students who are LGBTQ+, neurodiverse and/or disabled. The author has taken care to include activities, examples and reflection exercises tailored to a wide range of students, and to collaborate with communicators from diverse backgrounds.
To offer an inductive, iterative approach to business communication that focuses less on genre and more on the decisions communicators make.
To encourage students to reflect on their own attitudes, beliefs and assumptions about communication, and to connect their learning to other courses and/or their workplace experience. Each chapter begins with a ‘Questions for Reflection’ section so that students can reflect individually or in a learning journal and ends with suggested reflection activities that an instructor can assign.
To prepare students for a diverse workforce by including the voices of communicators from many different backgrounds.
This book also contains narratives by Brenda Fernie, who is the President of Seyem, the economic development branch of the Kwantlen First Nation. Students are invited to read her narrative then reflect on it as they read the rest of the chapter. Instructors may choose to have students freewrite about the connection between the narrative and the chapter in order to deepen their understanding of both.

The idea was to create a practical tool for assessing information literacy that anyone could use, was easy to norm, and focused on what students could do and where research instruction could be improved to increase students' information literacy. This rubric can help improve student success and information literacy learning outcomes in research assignments for any course. Used early in the semester it can serve as a diagnostic tool for supporting student researchers in developing the skills and habits of mind needed to successfully find and use information to answer a question, support a thesis, or solve a problem. Students could even use it to self-assess.

MATLAB, short for Matrix Laboratory, is a simple and flexible programming environment for a wide range of problems such as signal processing, optimization, linear programming and so on. The basic MATLAB software package can be extended by using add-on toolboxes. Examples of such toolboxes are: Signal Processing, Filter Design, Statistics and Symbolic Math.

Comprehensive documentation for MATLAB is available at Mathworks.com. In particular, an excellent (extensive) getting started guide is available at Getting started with MATLAB. There is also a very active newsgroup for MATLAB related questions, comp.soft-sys.matlab

MATLAB is an interpreted language. This implies that the source code is not compiled but interpreted on the fly. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. MATLAB allows for easy numerical calculation and visualization of the results without the need for advanced and time consuming programming. The disadvantage is that it can be slow, especially when bad programming practices are applied.

Although the modules are generally similar in size, some of the content is lighter in certain modules or more dense in others, so it may make sense to combine some modules in one week or draw out other modules over several weeks. Have you ever had trouble teaching the various topics of social psychology and fitting them together to form a coherent field? Dr. Stangor felt like he was presenting a laundry list of ideas, research studies, and phenomena, rather than an integrated set of principles and knowledge. He wondered how his students could be expected to remember and understand the many phenomena that social psychologists study? How could they tell what was most important? It was then that he realized a fresh approach to a Social Psychology textbook was needed to structure and integrate student learning; thus, Principles of Social Psychology was born. This textbook is based on a critical thinking approach, and its aim is to get students thinking actively and conceptually Đ with a greater focus on the forest than the trees. Yes, there are right and wrong answers, but the answers are not the only thing. What is perhaps even more important is how students get to the answers Đ the thinking process itself. Research Success - a self-paced information literacy mini course

What is information literacy? Simply put, it's the skills and habits that allow you to find and use information. At MCC it is a Core Learning Outcome -- one of the areas you will demonstrate competency in before you graduate. In the Academic Catalog, MCC states that Information Literacy is:

"The ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively and responsibly use and share that information for the problem at hand."

The way information literacy is assessed at MCC is through research assignments. When you see instructions that ask you to find, use and cite sources, you're doing research.

This course will help you succeed in research assignments.

It is divided into five self-paced chapters that progress through the stages of a student research process. Each chapter should take roughly 30 minutes to complete, and covers two to three learning outcomes that align with the Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, adopted by the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) in 2016.
