Building a Bungee Jump

A bungee jump involves jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord. Design a bungee jump that is "safe" for a hard-boiled egg. Create a safety egg harness and connect it to a rubber band, which is your the "bungee cord." Finally, attach your bungee cord to a force sensor to measures the forces that push or pull your egg.

Lesson 1 introduces students to the blow fly's life cycle and the accumulated degree hour (ADH) used by forensic entomologists for estimating the time of death. Lesson 2 introduces Dr. Krinsky's entomological work in solving a murder case in 1986. Students access several primary-source documents related to Dr. Krinsky's entomological work. Both lessons help students expand their understanding of a forensic entomologist's work and appreciate how scientists account for environmental/variable factors in forming a conclusion in a scientific study.

Exploring the Dynamic Nature of the Sun

Through an inquiry activity, students develop an understanding of the dynamic and variable nature of the Sun by comparing and contrasting images. Students work in small groups to explore images that vary with respect to time, scale, or technology. Students identify the similarities and differences between images and share their findings with peers. The class discusses the implications of the Sun as a variable force of nature and brainstorms a list of questions that have been raised by the comparison of images. During the following class period, the instructor facilitates a PowerPoint presentation to further student under­standing of the dynamic processes of our Sun and offer explanations to student questions.

The exercise asks students to make predictions, and then use the data to answer questions.
