In some cities, especially large cities such as Los Angeles or Mexico City, visible air pollution is a major problem, both for human health and the environment. A variety of sources contribute to air pollution, but personal vehicles account for one of the main sources. Though each car has relatively low emissions when compared to vehicles of the 1970s, there are so many more cars on the road now that their emissions play a large role in overall pollution. In this activity, students think about alternate ways to power a vehicle to reduce emissions. Student teams design an eco-friendly car using the engineering design process, and make a presentation to showcase their product.

Compiled and modified for instructional use by: Kate Darby, Western Washington University In 1887, Robert Towne built a metals smelter two and a half miles northwest of El Paso, Texas, across the river from Ciudad Juarez in Mexico and across the state border from several small towns in New Mexico. The smelter, which processed metal ore from regional mines, was quickly acquired by ASARCO (American Smelting and Refining Company) and became an important visual and economic institution in the region. In 1967, following the mantra of environmental regulation at the time—"the solution to pollution is dilution"—ASARCO erected what was then the tallest smokestack in the world: an 828-foot structure visible from much of the region. While the facility provided jobs to many in the region and produced metals important for a range of manufacturing and consumer products, by the 1970s, residents and scientists began to question the other products from the smelter—especially heavy metals pollution.
This case study includes discussion questions and data sources for further information.

SYNOPSIS: This lesson builds on students’ understanding of the cardiorespiratory system, showcases how climate change impacts cardiorespiratory health, and concludes with students exploring ways they can expand their actionable responses to climate change.
SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson teaches students about what is in the air we breathe, how trees are important to keeping the air clean, air pollution, and how to solve some of the big global problems. Links to local New Jersey organizations are provided. The TedEd video also links to more resources about air pollution. This lesson also includes some movement and a game to help students visualize how pollutants can be removed for the air. The videos contain accurate and thought-provoking information. This resource is recommended for teaching.

"Bacteria and other microorganisms cover nearly every surface on earth, including the surfaces we build and maintain. Ocean piers are unique sites at the intersection of terrestrial, aquatic, and human-built environments. Saltwater spray, inclement weather, and pollutants make piers a harsh environment for bacteria. Together, these factors suggest that piers house a unique microbiome. Researchers recently conducted a study to characterize the microbiomes found on pier surfaces. On nine piers along the coast of Hong Kong, the researchers found diverse microbiomes that were rich in novel bacterial species. Surface material (metal versus concrete) was the strongest factor influencing the bacterial community structure. Although the overall abundance was low, corrosion-associated bacteria were more prevalent on metal surfaces, and high-touch surfaces like handrails and poles had more human skin-associated microbes than other surfaces..."

"The development of long-read sequencing has allowed for the generation of more complete and contiguous genomes in metagenomics studies. However, long-reads are more prone to sequencing errors than short-reads, and these errors can end up incorporated in the draft genomes. Combining short- and long-reads can overcome such errors, but is computationally taxing. To avoid this, researchers developed the ‘Hierarchical Clustering Based Hybrid Assembly (HCBHA) approach.’ This approach first groups the long- and short-reads into candidate bacterial haplotypes and then assembles each group separately, which reduces the computational demand . Researchers tested this framework on a microbiome from activated sludge, an important part of wastewater treatment. The health of the watershed has a direct impact on the health of those that use it. This unit introduces students to the concept that imbalances and contaminants in the watershed can cause disease and infection in humans. The first part of this unit begins with an introduction to the major concept of a watershed and how humans can have a direct impact on the chemicals and organic matter that are carried within. Students study how chemical contaminants including mercury, nitrogen, arsenic, and lead are introduced into the watershed and the clinical presentation of these contaminants in humans. Each contaminant includes real-world case studies—including the arsenic ground-water contamination in Bangladesh and the lead pipe incident in Washington DC.
Students will also learn about microbial pathogens including coliform bacterial species, Naegleria fowleri , and Cryptosporidium . All pathogens include examples of how they are introduced into the watershed, how they infect humans, and how to remediate these pathogens. Sample case study formats for the presentation of this material are included in the activities section, along with labs that students can perform.

This unit exposes students to basic concepts of hydrology, like the hydrological cycle, water budget of a river and chemistry of carbon in freshwaters. Students will explore and study the components of the hydrological cycle, the factors that influence this cycle, investigate the water budget equation and compare and contrast two watersheds that have similar overall amount of precipitation, but differ in terms of temperature and climate.
Students will also learn about pollutants in fresh waters, pH and pOH of water and its influence on the ecosystem, chemistry of carbon and heavy metals and how does a sewage treatment plant work. As a part of their curriculum, a field trip to a local sewage treatment plant is highly recommended for students and teachers.
Each lesson will be accompanied by a lesson plan. Depending on lesson, also included will be examples and applications (problems to be solved by students using concepts presented in the lesson).
The unit is intended to be taught in 10th or 11th grade Physical and Environmental Science classes, but it can be used also by middle school 7th and 8th grade Science teachers to expose students to concepts related to physical, chemical properties of water, states of matter, physical and chemical change, water cycle and basic geology.

Deep-sea microbes are important agents for organic matter (OM) recycling and storage, but it’s unclear how these organisms cope with the fluctuating OM supply in the deep ocean, especially in the deepest areas: the hadal trenches. To learn more, a new study examined the metabolic potential of microbes in the phylum Chloroflexi using sediment samples from the Mariana Trench. Metagenomic sequencing revealed 6 novel species, 4 novel genera, 1 novel family, and 1 novel order of Chloroflexi in the sediment. Based on the sequences, the associated microbes were primarily OM consumers that could degrade various organic carbon (OC), sulfur, and halogenated compounds and could even metabolize degradation-resistant types of OM, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)..."

This activity provides the framework to help them identify the exact topics that they will discuss throughout a course in Environmental Analysis. The students are given constraints so that they don't either wander completely aimlessly through the environmental literature or pick only papers on their favorite topic. They are instead asked to dip into the literature to find papers that deal with analysis of pollutants in air, water, and solid matrices, and to have at least one that is relevant to climate change.

They use alcohol and chromatography paper to separate the components of black and colored marker ink. Students witness first-hand how components of a solution can be separated, even when those individual components are not visible in solution.

SYNOPSIS: This lesson is about the distribution and density of trees in urban areas and how that relates to environmental justice.
SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson uses data from peer-reviewed research that breaks down the forest cover in cities as it correlates to income. The evidence is clear and convincing that more affluent neighborhoods have more tree cover, which has a documented benefit on the residents. All external links are scientifically sound, and this lesson has pass our science quality assessment.
POSITIVES: -This is an engaging lesson because it is so personal. Students will think about tree cover where they live and how that relates to demographic data. -Students will practice their data analysis skills.
ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES: -It is necessary to share the Student Slideshow with your students and give them editing access before beginning the lesson.
