The target audience of this lesson are adult learners at basic level who may have reading difficulties or need to refresh or improve their reading fluency and who have an interest in agriculture or gardening.
The lesson can optionally be based upon principles of Systemic Functional Grammar and it is built around planning a small garden, with potential for tie-in to a hands on project. The lesson aims to help learners construct a mental model from a text; enable learners to answer 'what' and 'where' questions about key details in a text; and help learners develop reading skills and strategies which may later be useful in examinations like the GED.

Students preparing for the ACT, GED or other college prep equivalency exams or college entrance need to know the basics of science. Geology is one area that is included on most of these types of exams.  The study of continental drift forces involved and effect of the movement combine several science disciplines that will help students on those exams. In this unit, learners will illustrate, describe and demonstrate a basic knowledge of plate tectonics and the effect of shifts on seismic activity. This unit follows the WIPPEA model for lesson planning, and implements open-classroom strategies, where students will not only use OER but also modify and republish their content.

To plot an inequality, such as x>3, on a number line, first draw a circle over the number (e.g., 3). Then if the sign includes equal to (≥ or ≤), fill in the circle. If the sign does not include equal to (> or <), leave the circle unfilled in. Finally, draw a line going from the circle in the direction of the numbers that make the inequality true.

This lesson is designed to benefit adult learners who are studying at a 6th to 8th grade level. The lesson would be most useful for English Language Learners but could also be useful to native English speakers who are finishing up their formal education. The lesson reviews how to use affirmative and negative present perfect, such as “I have (not) done”. It is assumed that learners have already studied and can recognize the formation of the present perfect, but the grammar will be reviewed briefly. Learners will practice forming the present perfect with vocabulary in the context of work and finding work. They will work in pairs, reading excerpts from job ads and writing present perfect sentences that indicate that they have done that job/task. Finally, learners will practice creating present perfect sentences with relation to their own work experience. This lesson is designed to take 30 minutes.

Push and Support Cards: A Bridge to Advanced Mathematics for the Multi-Level Adult Education Classroom Curriculum Guide
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Adult education classrooms are commonly comprised of learners who have widely disparate levels of mathematical problem-solving skills. This is true regardless of what level a student may be assessed at when entering an adult education program or what level class they are placed in. Providing students with differentiated instruction in the form of Push and Support cards is one way to level this imbalance, keeping all students engaged in one high-cognitive task that supports and encourages learners who are stuck, while at the same time, providing extensions for students who move through the initial phase of the task quickly. Thus, all
students are continually moving forward during the activity, and when the task ends, all students have made progress in their journey towards developing conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas along with a productive disposition, belief in one’s own ability to successfully engage with mathematics.

REBELAH project results collections

This is a collection of all the results of the REBELAH project.

The REBELAH project was designed to help foster more inclusive learning environments in adult education. Studies have shown that members of minoritized religious and ethnic groups experience trouble in educational settings, as learners from the majoritized groups feel uncomfortable when they are in their group. The REBELAH project aimed to create tools and activities that can help trainers and learners foster more inclusive and safe learning environments. These tools and activities have a particular focus on (European) cultural heritage.

These results include two handbooks (a book with activities useful during inclusiveness and heritage workshops, and a train the trainer handbook), six videos showing how heritage items and sites can be used to foster inclusivity in workshops settings, and a Google maps infosheet with 24 Prezi presentations on specific heritage items used during the project.

The handbooks are licensed under CC BY-NC-ND, and the other materials are licensed under CC BY-NC-SA.
