Curriculum Essentials: A Journey
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with what curriculum is, how it is defined, what is involved in the process of its development, the different types and models of curriculum, as well as innovations to make teaching and learning more engaging and meaningful. This will be balanced by the impact of assessment and adapting curriculum in times of challenges with an eye towards the work of great schools and master teachers during times of change.
The inclusion of Open Educational Resources (OER) provide a new and exciting dimension to the text through the inclusion of educational resources from experts who have graciously consented to share their work with others at no cost, thereby giving all readers the opportunity of learning about curriculum without the burden of cost as a barrier that shuts out capable and enthusiastic learners from gaining the knowledge and skills necessary in becoming thoughtful consumers and practitioners of curriculum.
Each chapter has a short introduction followed by essential questions that are designed to pique the reader’s interest, then by content that will reveal answers to the questions and enhance the reader’s curriculum knowledge base through interactive learning activities (ILA).

The Whole Child: Development in the Early Years
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

This text gives an overview of development, beginning in the mother’s womb through about the age of eight. It starts with a look at perspectives of early childhood, including how children have been viewed historically as well as cross-culturally. Following this chapter, there is a complete overview of the important theorists that have helped to deepen and bring clarity to how children develop. These theories include psychodynamic, behavioral, social cognitive theory, cognitive theory, humanistic, multiple intelligence, growth mindset, and Bloom’s taxonomy. Understanding the implications of each theory is important foundational knowledge for the study of development.

Chapters Three and Four give an overview of the domains of development, followed by an overview of the developing brain. Chapter Five takes a look at the prenatal period, including the birth and postpartum process. Chapter Six describes development in infancy, and Chapter Seven describes the toddler years, including safety considerations that are critical for this period. Chapter Eight looks at the preschool years, including the role of peers, play, and television (and other electronics) in development. Chapter Nine concludes the text with a brief look at the start of what is known as the school-age years, universally recognized as between the ages of five and eight.

Network Sense: Methods for Visualizing a Discipline
Only Sharing Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

Derek Mueller advocates for a methodology to visualize and understand disciplinarity through what he calls network sense. Mueller’s methodology combines distant reading with thin description in a way that allows academics to avoid the obsessive depth of thick description. Distant reading and thin description complement networks of association in a way that affords inquiry and discovery for newcomers and seasoned scholars alike. Using word clouds, citation frequency graphs, and maps of scholarly activity as visual models, he presents ways we can visualize the field of rhetoric and composition/writing studies and its so-called turns, or widespread attention events, such as the global turn, visual turn, multimodal turn, and so on. This book is published by the WAC Clearinghouse/Colorado State University Open Press #writing book series and co-presented by the Digital Publishing Institute at WVU Libraries.

Charles Chesnutt in the Classroom

In the world of engaged learning, teachers are inspired by students. I teach primarily classes in African American literature, many of which answer requirements for General Education credit. Because General Education enrollment consists of students from colleges across the university, I have the opportunity to introduce a diverse group of students to the works of Charles Chesnutt, whom I describe as “the most famous Cleveland writer you’ve never heard of.” Inevitably, despite their diverse academic majors, all agree that what they are learning needs to be shared with teachers in the Cleveland Metropolitan school system. Yet while there are numerous websites devoted to Charles Chesnutt, few pay more than passing attention to his association with Cleveland, where Chesnutt was born in 1858, returned in 1883, built one the city’s most successful court reporting businesses, and wrote continuously until his death in 1932.
