This kit provides teachers and other educators with the materials to help young children begin to understand the purpose of TV commercials (and advertising in general) in terms of selling intent, and to recognize the types of tricks that advertisers may use to make products look better than they really are. Specific lessons focus on foods groups and misleading nutritional messages commonly found in children's TV commercials, especially the "complete breakfast shot" and highly sugared pseudo-fruit snacks and beverages. Lessons are designed to address developmentally appropriate health standards, and many different commercials are provided so that children can discuss and practice what they have learned.

Students imagine they are stranded on an island and must create the brightest light possible with the meager supplies they have on hand in order to gain the attention of a rescue airplane. In small groups, students create circuits using items in their "survival kits" to create maximum voltage, measured with a multimeter and two LED lights. To complete the activity, students act as engineers by using the given materials to create circuits that produces the highest voltage and light up the most LED lights. They apply their knowledge of how voltage differs in a series circuit and a parallel circuit to design their solutions.

"The abundant vegetation in forested areas can obstruct the view of potential food sources giving animals that can locate food with senses other than sight an advantage. While researchers hypothesize that fruit aromas evolved to attract primates to effectively disperse the seeds they contain, it’s unclear whether primates can use odor cues to locate fruit outside of their visual range. A recent study tested whether ring-tailed lemurs could detect distant hidden fruit by scent alone. The researchers hid containers holding real and imitation cantaloupe 4-17 m away from a trail routinely used by lemurs. They found that the lemurs were able to locate the real cantaloupe when the wind blew its scent toward the trail but were unable to find the imitation cantaloupe. The lemurs also showed behaviors indicating that they were following the cantaloupe “odor plume..."

"Designer rootstocks enable fruit trees to thrive under otherwise unbearable conditions, providing strong anchorage and defending against biological and nonbiological stressors. But what role does the root microbiome play in this assistive act? To find out, researchers used 16S rRNA sequencing to examine the rootstocks of Valencia orange trees in Florida. Results showed that the genetic makeup of different rootstocks determined how the root microbiome responded to compost treatment. The aspects of the root microbiome that were rootstock- specific included bacterial abundance, diversity, and community composition. These findings suggest that specific bacteria drive changes in nutrient concentrations accessed by different rootstocks. Understanding this intimate relationship is important to supporting overall plant health and could inspire research into how root microbes might affect other parts of trees..."
