The aim of this compendium is to provide nurse educators with an easily accessible collection of OER designed to support student learning, particularly within nursing programs.

A search of the Pressbooks directory was undertaken to identify resources for potential inclusion in this compendium. These resources were filtered according to the following inclusion criteria: nursing authorship; North American; published after 2015; and intended for nursing students. Materials were excluded if they were identified as self-published books or were not openly licensed.

This resulted in a total of 25 resources that address areas inclusive of, but not limited to, health assessment, nursing leadership and management, foundational nursing practice skills, and the care of special populations.

The compendium is presented as a tabulation of key elements for each of the 25 resources, adapted from the Faculty Guide for Evaluating Open Education Resources. Five key elements are described relative to the criteria of credibility (i.e., authorship, publisher, year of most recent update), relevance (i.e., title of the open textbook, aim, intended audience, topical foci), accessibility/interactivity (i.e., figure and tables, videos, review questions, total interactive H5P activities), and licensing (i.e., availability for use with attribution).

Users of this compendium are encouraged to consider each of the tabulated elements (e.g. credibility, relevance, accessibility/interactivity, and licensing) to determine the merit of directly accessing a resource for potential inclusion as a supplement in a nursing course.

Case studies have been developed based on the CASN Top 10 Adult Nursing Situations for High Fidelity Simulation (2019) and include: An older adult in a community setting living with a chronic perfusion illness An older adult in medical acute care experiencing electrolyte imbalance A young adult in the community experiencing altered mood and substance use problems A deteriorating adult in surgical acute care Following the experience, facilitators have the option of leading a debrief, on one or all case studies, and can use the reflection questions provided to stimulate dialogue. As lifelong learners, learners are encouraged to utilize these case studies as many times as they would like and can use the resources contained within to support their learning.

It is meant to supplement any nursing research text. Designed to provide educators with creative teaching ideas, this text includes a variety of lessons on nursing research topics. Topics include bias, measurement, sampling, theory and more. Lessons provide active learning for in-class, hybrid, and online formats. Each lesson includes objectives, overview, and detailed steps. As an open access resource, the text is continuously in-process. Designed to be independent of any published text, the book compliments any nursing research and evidence-based course. This text is also a suitable resource for introductory research in other disciplines.

Each chapter is an activity designed to supplement didactic andragogy. The activities develop creativity and facilitate engagement in the nursing research content. Through creative engagement, students access learning areas of the brain that otherwise remain unstimulated. Organized by the order in which they might be discussed in class, each chapter builds upon previous learning. In chapter two students are introduced by creating puppets to develop research questions and study ideas. Chapter three focuses specifically on generating problem and purpose statements. Culture shots in chapter five engages students in understanding theory generation, qualitative research and ethics in data collection. Chapters six and seven build upon and strengthen theory understanding through creating concepts and challenging assumptions. In chapter eight, biases and threats to validity are investigated through the use of parody. Sampling is addressed in chapters nine through eleven. Chapter twelve reinforces learning on measurement error. The last four chapters use creative games to help students pull it all together. Introducing public health ethics poses two special challenges. First, it is a relatively new field that combines public health and practical ethics. Its unfamiliarity requires considerable explanation, yet its scope and emergent qualities make delineation difficult. Moreover, while the early development of public health ethics occurred in a western context, its reach, like public health itself, has become global. A second challenge, then, is to articulate an approach specific enough to provide clear guidance yet sufficiently flexible and encompassing to adapt to global contexts. Broadly speaking, public health ethics helps guide practical decisions affecting population or community health based on scientific evidence and in accordance with accepted values and standards of right and wrong. In these ways, public health ethics builds on its parent disciplines of public health and ethics. This dual inheritance plays out in the definition the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers of public health ethics: “A systematic process to clarify, prioritize, and justify possible courses of public health action based on ethical principles, values and beliefs of stakeholders, and scientific and other information” (CDC 2011). Public health ethics shares with other fields of practical and professional ethics both the general theories of ethics and a common store of ethical principles, values, and beliefs. It differs from these other fields largely in the nature of challenges that public health officials typically encounter and in the ethical frameworks it employs to address these challenges. Frameworks provide methodical approaches or procedures that tailor general ethical theories, principles, values, and beliefs to the specific ethical challenges that arise in a particular field. Although no framework is definitive, many are useful, and some are especially effective in particular contexts. This chapter will conclude by setting forth a straightforward, stepwise ethics framework that provides a tool for analyzing the cases in this volume and, more importantly, one that public health practitioners have found useful in a range of contexts. For a public health practitioner, knowing how to employ an ethics framework to address a range of ethical challenges in public health—a know-how that depends on practice—is the ultimate take-home message.
