Algebra teachers, Juliana Jones and Marlo Warburton, have common philosophies and expectations in their algebra classrooms but use their own unique teaching styles and structures to create consistent experiences for students. Collaboration is an important part of that process and allows teachers to provide common learning experiences in their classrooms despite different teaching styles and structures. This course for middle and high school teachers uses video, online text, classroom activities, and Web-based activities to explore American history from the Pre-Columbian era through Reconstruction. The video programs are divided into three segments: Historical Perspectives, an overview of the historical era; Faces of America, in which biographies of individuals illustrate larger events; and Hands-on History, a behind-the-scenes look at how history is studied, documented, and presented. Additional units introduce methods to strengthen teachers' knowledge of American history, while reviewing content. The online text, facilitator guide, and Web site supplement the video content.

Artifacts & Fiction: Workshop in American Literature

This video workshop for high school American literature teachers introduces techniques for reading cultural, political, and religious artifacts and connecting them to the literature they teach. In each video program, experts in multiple disciplines do close analysis of a wide range of visual, print, and physical artifacts. The experts engage on-camera teachers in a discussion of the artifacts and how they can enhance the study of works of literature. These teachers then use artifacts with their own students to help deepen their understanding of the historical, political, and social contexts of the literature they read. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn and practice a six-step process for choosing and using artifacts successfully with their students.

The Art of Teaching the Arts: A Workshop for High School Teachers is an eight-part professional development workshop for use by high school dance, music, theatre, and visual art teachers. The workshop examines how principles of good teaching are carried out in teaching the arts at the high school level. In the eight one-hour video programs, seven principles of effective teaching are introduced, then explored in depth. Teachers from arts magnet high schools and comprehensive high schools across the country are shown demonstrating their practice and discussing their goals, methods, and experiences. An interactive Web site and a print guide support and augment the video programs. The Web site includes activities for workshop sessions that encourage participants to draw on their own experiences; background on the schools and teachers featured in the video programs; and interactive features that provide perspective on the teaching principles.

The 14 video programs Ń filmed in elementary schools around the country Ń along with a print guide and companion Web site, serve as a professional development resource for K-5 teachers seeking new ideas for integrating the arts into the classroom. Teachers featured in these programs include specialists in dance, music, theatre, and visual art, as well as classroom teachers from kindergarten through fifth grade. Programs 2 through 6 show Arts Specialists at Work, 7 through 12 present ideas for Arts in the General Classroom, and 13 and 14 address the challenges of Organizing for the Arts.

The Arts in Every Classroom: A Workshop for Elementary School Teachers

This video workshop provides new ideas about working with the arts for K-5 classroom and arts specialist teachers. The eight one-hour video programs show workshop leaders from the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts working with Learner Teams Ń teachers, principals, and arts specialists Ń from three elementary schools. The Learner Teams work through a curriculum unit based on a multi-arts performance piece by Cirque du Soleil. Classroom segments show schoolchildren engaged in the same lessons. Learner Team members then begin to design their own arts-based units, and return to their schools to put into practice what they learned. Web and print materials provide context and activities for using the videos in workshop sessions. Audio and video demonstration materials needed to teach the classroom lessons in Programs 1-4 can be found on the Classroom Demonstration Materials videotape, which is provided free to buyers of the set of workshop videotapes.

This curriculum, which may be used in whole or in part, offers an overview of foster care, background on the characteristics of kin and non-kin foster parents, and trends in foster care. Special emphasis is placed on foster care recruitment, training, and retention efforts as well as the foster care payment rate structure. A comprehensive look at the elements that comprise quality of care in kinship and non-related foster homes is included. The curriculum highlights the philosophical reasons for providing quality care, the history and philosophy of kinship care, a legal history and brief policy analysis of kinship care, and domains of quality. Practice tips for child welfare workers and administrators are included, as well as a chapter where kin and non-kin foster parents address their relationship with the child welfare system and recent child welfare policies affecting foster parents and kinship caregivers. The assessment module is meant for use either after completion of the project-based learning module or with participants who are familiar with project-based learning. The module is designed for a two to three hour class or session, divided into two parts.Part One, Guided Process, is designed to give participants a brief introduction to assessment. It answers the questions "Why is Assessment Important?"; "What are Some Types of Assessment?"; and "How Do Rubrics Help?" The Guided Process includes the Assessment Resources section and a PowerPointхи presentation, including presenter notes. This presentation can be shown directly from the Web site or can be downloaded for use as a stand-alone slide show. The video segment, "Assessment Overview" demonstrates assessment in action at various schools. The Assessment Resources section contains additional examples of assessment in action (Urban Academy, Mountlake Terrace High School, and Assessing Project-Based Work).Part Two, Group Participation, assigns readings and activities for experiential, project-based learning. Ideally, the tasks will be accomplished using group collaboration and with the use of technology.Specific ISTE NETS Standards have been addressed in this module.

This workshop targets full time and part time faculty, in order to teach self-care skills that aim to reduce stress and reduce the potential for burnout.This workshop will teach specific strategies that faculty members can use to increase wellness, maintain well-being, and retain a sense of emotional health.  These strategies can also be used in the classroom to enhance student well-being.  Faculty members who experience emotional rejuvenation can bring a renewed sense of energy into the classroom, in turn providing students with an enhanced educational experience.Participants in this course will read material from websites, view video clips, participate in online discussion boards, and develop a self-care plan.Participants in this workshop will be able to:·         Identify and describe the importance of faculty well-being;·         Describe the link between teacher health and student benefit;·         Describe well-being and various definitions of health;·         Discuss the key elements of well-being from these highly regarded authors on the topic:o   Martin Seligman -  Flourisho   Dan Beuttner - The Blue Zones·         Identify the warning signs of burnout·         Identify strategies for staying fresh on the job·         Understand the concept of nurturing/caring for the various aspects of the educator’s whole person·         Develop a personal care plan to address the seven selves, according to the whole person model Over a five week period, participants will spend 2 hours per week reading materials, participating in online discussions, and completing a self-care/wellness plan.

Beyond Weather and the Water Cycle is an online professional development magazine which focuses on preparing elementary teachers to teach climate science concepts while also integrating inquiry-based science and literacy instruction. The project draws on research showing that an integrated approach can improve student achievement in science, as well as in reading comprehension and oral and written discourse abilities. Through the Beyond Weather and Water Cycle project, we propose to increase elementary teachers’ understanding of climate and climate change, increase the amount and quality of science taught in elementary classrooms, and build a virtual professional learning community of practice around the teaching of climate and climate change.
