This robust set of videos, activity sheets, and short written summaries is designed for anyone to use when integrating speaking assignments and activities into college level courses. Each video highlights a specific student activity, applicable to any delivery mode, complete with a video introduction, template, and lesson plan to download. In this assignment students first look up a genetic condition in Genetics Home Reference (which is a public domain site maintained by the National Institute of Health). Then they give a description of the condition and make a problem based on the condition for other students to solve.

As OER awareness continues to increase in postsecondary education, faculty are becoming more curious about how they might invite their students into the creation process, often referred to as Open Pedagogy. As editors and/or creators of OER, students have the opportunity to make existing course content more culturally responsive and representative of their own lived experiences. This collaborative process organically generates opportunities to encourage the diversification of the curriculum and reverse historical inequities perpetuated in commercial textbooks, which are far less likely to be inclusive and representative of underrepresented and marginalized voices.

Although Open Pedagogy provides a new and exciting opportunity to invite the student into the scholarly conversation, it’s crucial to scaffold this process to ensure we both respect student agency and help them create the most accessible, representative, high-quality OER.

Panelists and OER practitioners Hannah Davidson, Accessibility Specialist at Plymouth State University; Will Cross, Director of the Copyright & Digital Scholarship Center in the NC State University Libraries; Stacy Katz, Assistant Professor and Open Resources Librarian-STEM Liaison at Lehman College, City University of New York; and Steel Wagstaff, Educational Product Manager at Pressbooks shared their expertise and relevant experiences concerning topics like author agency, privacy, accessibility, and copyright and fair use.

The syllabus used for the University College Groningen course Biopsychology in Spring 2021. This syllabus outlines the general lesson plan for the course, but focuses most heavily on the main assessment method used in the course: the Signature project. For this project, students worked together in small teams to create an interdisciplinary webpage on a Biopsychology topic. These resulting research-based, peer-reviewed webpages cover a range of topics, and contain active learning assignments for others to use. The webpages were tied together to create another open educational resource, found related to this syllabus.

The syllabus outlines in detail how the project was created and graded, and can be used as inspiration for others to create their own active learning assignment which results in the creation of open educational resource.

This module provides faculty in higher education with an introduction to the use and creation of Open Educational Resources. It is intended for faculty who are new to the principles of Open Education. Several of the examples in this module relate to higher education in Canada, but you are encouraged to adapt the resources you suit your context.It can be used as part of a course on open education and would benefit from an expanded discussion of Open Pedagogy, an additional module on Open Access, and a module on Developing Open Policies for higher education institutions.

In this assignment, students will create a fictional person with a disability, describe how their needs could be met in a classroom setting, and work with a partner to discuss possible challenges and opportunities. There is an option to turn the material created in this assignment into an assignment as a practice of regenerative Open Educational Resources and Open Pedagogy.

In a third and final webinar in its series on exploring aspects of Open Pedagogy, the New England Board of Higher Education is honored to welcome Jasmine Roberts as she leads us in a discussion on the importance of centering social justice in this work.

Open education frameworks address high-cost course materials, but with an increase in the adoption of open educational materials, conversations about inclusive teaching, social justice, and anti-racism pedagogical practices need to be at the center of open practices. Roberts’ talk will address the urgency of adopting social justice practices in open education and strategies on how to do this.
