"The microbial compositions of hot springs are strongly influenced by temperature and pH. _Acidithiobacillus_ bacteria are found in diverse hot springs, but the genomic features that enable their adaptability are unclear. A recent DNA sequencing study analyzed the genomes of _Acidithiobacillus_ from hot springs in New Zealand and compared them to published non-hot-spring _Acidithiobacillus_ sequences. _Acidithiobacillus_ typically accounted for over 10% of the prokaryote abundance in the springs. Three species, including two novel species (TVZ\\_G2 and TVZ\\_G3), accounted for over 90% of _Acidithiobacillus _and were found in springs with wide-ranging characteristics. A fourth related novel species was also found, although in low abundance. All four species were found at temperatures and pHs above the known limits for _Acidithiobacillus, _likely because they had more GC bases and proline codons in their DNA than other species, increasing their thermostability..."

In this sophomore design course, you will be challenged with three design tasks: a first concerning water resources/treatment, a second concerning structural design, and a third focusing on the conceptual (re)design of a large system, Boston's Back Bay. The first two tasks require the design, fabrication and testing of hardware. Several laboratory experiments will be carried out and lectures will be presented to introduce students to the conceptual and experimental basis for design in both domains.
This course was based in large part on the Fall 2005 offering of 1.101, developed by Prof. Harold Hemond.

Esta cartilha didática foi pensada no sentido de dinamizar o ensino e aprendizagem em tópicos de
ciências ambientais, já que muitos conceitos, na maioria das vezes, são trabalhados de maneira muito
abstrata sem que haja uma aproximação com a realidade do público envolvido, o que faz com que o
processo de conhecimento não seja muito significativo.
Nesse contexto, esse material educacional tem como objetivo auxiliar professores, alunos e a
comunidade na busca de entender um pouco mais sobre a acidez da água de consumo, tendo em vista que o
pH deve ser considerado como um indicador de potabilidade da água destinada ao abastecimento humano.
Assim, a água é um dos fatores abióticos mais importantes para a existência da vida, uma vez que é
extremamente relevante que esse recurso mineral esteja em condições adequadas para ser consumido por
todos os seres vivos, em especial a espécie humana, sendo que ela não deve causar malefícios à saúde
daqueles que a consomem.
Pensando nisso, esta cartilha didática mostrará como fazer testes para verificar a acidez ou a
basicidade da água de consumo por meio de um indicador natural ácido-base, o qual será utilizado o
extrato alcoólico da planta Pariri (Arrabiadea chica), muito comum na região amazônica para fins
medicinais, para essa verificação, já que ela faz parte de um grande grupo de vegetais, entre eles a
beterraba e repolho roxo que possuem, em sua estrutura química, as Antocianina, as quais podem ser
utilizadas como indicadores naturais de pH, pois são capazes de mudar de cor dependendo das
características físico-químicas da solução em que estão inseridas.
Logo, aquele que fizer uso deste produto didático poderá estabelecer uma relação entre os conceitos
teóricos e sua realidade. Como exemplo, é a alteração na coloração dos corantes naturais, quando
submetidos em diferentes graus de acidez, que podem ser verificados em diversas substâncias, a exemplo
dos produtos domésticos, tais como vinagre e água sanitária. Além disso, uma outra aplicação é a
avaliação da acidez da água da consumo, bem como a chuva ácida que podem ser indicativos de poluição
hídrica.
Desse modo, acreditamos que este material educativo contribuirá para tornar os conceitos aqui
apresentados menos abstratos e mais acessíveis a todos, já que haverá uma aproximação do conhecimento
científico com o cotidiano das pessoas a partir do conteúdo sobre acidez e basicidade contido na cartilha.

Students take advantage of the natural ability of red cabbage juice to perform as a pH indicator to test the pH of seven common household liquids. Then they evaluate the accuracy of the red cabbage indicator, by testing the pH of the liquids using an engineer-designed tool, pH indicator strips. Like environmental engineers working on water remediation or water treatment projects, understanding the chemical properties (including pH) of contaminants is important for safeguarding the health of environmental water sources and systems.

"The transcription factor CREB plays an important role in the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, both increased and decreased CREB expression have been proposed to mediate the proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). Additionally, the regulatory signaling of CREB activation in PASMCs proliferation has not been well characterized in PH. Researchers recently used various in vitro techniques to clarify CREB’s role. CRE-containing genes were upregulated in PH PASMCs, and total and phosphorylated CREB protein levels were elevated in PASMCs from rats with monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PH. Prolonged upregulation of serum-induced CREB phosphorylation was also observed in hypoxia-pretreated PASMCs. These results may have been due to activation of multiple protein kinases and downregulation of numerous phosphatases targeting CREB..."

This unit includes 10 lessons that culminate in a student created final product presentation on the factors that influence climate change through the lens of chemistry and oceanography using literacy strategies to conduct inquiry level research.

Using inquiry-based reading, student will examine an anchor text to formulate a question to guide their research and development of student driven projects. Throughout the unit, students will use a variety of texts, websites, and other resources to develop a product and presentation that exhibits their literacy and inquiry skills. Soap vs. Shampoo Surfactant Lab

Students learn about the properties of solutions—such as ion interactions, surface tension and viscosity—as they make their own soap and shampoo and then compare their properties. Working as if they are chemical engineers, they explore and compare how the two surfactants behave in tap water, as well as classroom-prepared acidic water, hard water and seawater using four tests: a “shake test” (assessing the amount of bubbles produced), a surface tension test, a viscosity test, and a pH test. Then they coalesce their findings into a recommendation for how to engineer the best soap versus shampoo. The activity may be shortened by using purchased liquid soap and shampoo from which students proceed to conduct the four tests. A lab worksheet and post-quiz are provided.

"The microbes found in topsoil are a vital part of the Earth’s ecology. While several recent studies have explored these microbiomes on a global scale, their data on sub-Saharan Africa was sparse, despite the looming threat of climate change to the region. To close this gap, researchers recently examined the microbial ecology of 810 sites across 9 sub-Saharan African countries. The topsoil microbiomes were shaped by a broad range of environmental factors, particularly pH, precipitation, and temperature, and each nation had a quantifiably distinct topsoil microbiome. Computer models based on the data also predicted how country-specific microbiomes might respond to climate change. In Kenya, for example, higher temperatures and lower rainfall could diminish microbial diversity, whereas in Benin, the predicted increase in precipitation is likely to boost fungal biodiversity..."
