It is a vital skill to learn to respond to what we read. Teach students the important skill of sharing books by creating a book report with this simple lesson plan. There are a variety of options for students to choose from and a rubric attached.

In this set of lessons which extend over several days, students read excerpts from "The Death of Benny Paret" by Norman Mailer and "The Fight" by William Hazlitt. Students annotate the text, specifically looking for metaphor and simile, tone, and syntax. Working with a partner, students write three paragraphs, analyzing metaphor or simile, tone, and syntax in "The Death of Benny Paret." Working independently, students write one paragraph, choosing to analyze metaphor or simile, tone, or syntax in "The Fight."

Reading Robert Browning's poem "My Last Duchess," students will explore the use of dramatic monologue as a poetic form, where the speaker often reveals far more than intended.

CHN 102 is a continuation of CHN 101. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in standard Mandarin Chinese are further developed. Students will gain these four skills, attaining approximately the Intermediate-low level on the ACTFL-ETS (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale. Topics of conversation include education, sports, entertainment, travel, and health.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

* Understand sentence length utterances which consist of recombination of learned utterances on a variety of topics. Content refer primarily to basic personal background and needs, social conversations and some complex tasks.
* Handle successfully a variety of uncomplicated task oriented and social functions. Can ask and answer questions participate in simple conversations on topics beyond the most immediate needs.
* Read consistently with increased understanding simple connected texts dealing with basic personal and social needs. Student will have sufficient comprehension to understand some authentic material as it reflects similarity to specially prepared material and/or to high frequency oral vocabulary and structure.
* Meet a number of practical writing needs. Can write short simple letters. Contents involves personal preference, daily routine, everyday events, and other topics grounded in personal experience. Evidence of control of the syntax of non-complex sentences. Can create a collection of sentences on a given topic.
* List some essential points of Chinese geography, society, and culture.

In this course, students will learn basic Microsoft Windows 10 Operating Systems skills (including Core PC Hardware Components, Graphical User Interface, Local and Cloud File Management, Applications, Internet Browsers, Security, and key System Utilities), Google Email, Contacts, Calendar, and Drive applications, as well as introduction to Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Presentation applications. Additionally, students will learn to create and convert documents between different format (Microsoft and Google apps).

The goal of this 10 lesson, grade 4 unit, is for students to continue articulating steps of increasing complexity to solve problems. Their understanding of developing and following a correct step-by-step procedure when developing computer programs is enhanced by the reading and activities in this unit.
The key question guiding the unit is: What kinds of problems can we solve with computers?

CLUE was designed to help students attain a confident, competent, and coherent understanding of basic chemistry, in particular of the chemistry associated with organisms and their origins.

Long Description:
Chemistry, Life the Universe and Everything (CLUE) is a transformed general chemistry curriculum, developed by an interdisciplinary team of a chemist and a molecular biologist, that aims to bring about evidence-based change in general chemistry. General Chemistry is a gateway course for many students intending on careers in scientific, engineering, and health care-related disciplines. While there have been many attempts to improve the outcomes for these students, little has changed over the past 60 years. Recent transformation efforts have focused primarily on incorporating student engagement techniques into the course, rather than considering what it is that is important for students to learn. CLUE is different. CLUE was developed using a design research approach that focuses on scaffolded progressions around four core ideas: structure and properties, bonding and interactions, energy, and change and stability. The course emphasizes causal mechanistic reasoning in order to help students move beyond knowing that, to knowing how and knowing why chemical phenomena occur.

In this lesson students learn how computers represent images. To begin the lesson they consider the challenge of turning all the complexity of vision into a binary pattern. Through a series of images showing how this transformation is made students are introduced to the concept of splitting images into squares or "pixels" which can then be turned on or off individually to make the entire image. Students then do a short set of challenges using the Pixelation Widget in order to draw black and white images. Puzzles are designed to call out some of the challenges of representing images in this way. In the wrap up students make connections between the system for representing images and the system for representing text they learned in the previous lesson.

Students will examine how technology is changing or eliminated careers that currently exist. Students will draw conclusions and develop hypotheses about these current careers and the changes that could possibly occur based on technology.

The short story "The Cask of Amontillado," by Edgar Allan Poe is an effective venue for teaching English I literary terms. The following lesson plan is designed to engage the reader in a deeper than superficial reading of the text. It is also designed to elicit discussion and written critical-thinking responses. This lesson assumes that the literary terms have already been introduced. However, if they have not, the teacher may use this lesson to introduce these terms in the context of the literature.

The Castle of Otranto is often referred to as the first Gothic novel. Which is fair enough, so far as it goes; Walpole’s novel did establish many key features of this genre, which has been popular with readers ever since The Castle of Otranto was first published on Christmas Eve, 1764. Like the Gothic novels, plays, stories, and films that followed it, The Castle of Otranto teases us by suggesting that the rules of the everyday world do not always apply, that sometimes only a supernatural explanation can account for everything we see. As you begin your study of college chemistry, those of you who do not intend to become professional chemists may well wonder why you need to study chemistry. You will soon discover that a basic understanding of chemistry is useful in a wide range of disciplines and career paths. You will also discover that an understanding of chemistry helps you make informed decisions about many issues that affect you, your community, and your world. A major goal of this text is to demonstrate the importance of chemistry in your daily life and in our collective understanding of both the physical world we occupy and the biological realm of which we are apart.
