How Arguments Work takes students through the techniques they will need to respond to readings and make sophisticated arguments in any college class. This is a practical guide to argumentation with strategies and templates for the kinds of assignments students will commonly encounter. It covers rhetorical concepts in everyday language and explores how arguments can build trust and move readers.

Focuses on academic writing as a means of inquiry. Uses critical reading, discussion and the writing process to explore ideas, develop cultural awareness and formulate positions. Emphasizes development of a variety of strategies to present evidence in support of a thesis.

This course is designed to help the student improve his or her writing ability, which is necessary for ongoing success in all academic subjects. Coursework focuses on critical reading and analytic writing in response to readings with emphasis on organization, unity, coherence, and adequate development; an introduction to the expository essay; and a review of the rules and conventions of standard written English. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: recognize organizing principles, including the relationship between sentences; outline the relationships between main ideas and subordinate ideas within assigned readings; write analytical paragraphs in response to readings; recognize main and secondary points, making somewhat fine distinctions; make simple deductions from a series of facts; use punctuation correctly; demonstrate sound principles of reading critically; craft short essays employing a variety of organizational patterns; narrow a topic, write a clear and focused thesis statement, and create an outline with main and subordinate ideas; support the thesis statement with sufficient appropriate primary and secondary points and details; craft appropriate introductions and conclusions; use transitional words and expressions and employ a variety of sentence patterns to improve coherence; proofread to eliminate spelling and usage errors. This book has been developed to support English Composition courses at rural Arizona community colleges. The book adopts the metaphor of conversation to discuss the reading and writing moves students are expected to make in academic settings. The text has been organized around the general moves of reading/research (preparing to join the conversation), summarizing/quoting/paraphrasing and responding (joining the conversation) and applying rhetorical concepts for persuasion (influencing the conversation).

Skills for English Composition is in draft form, being prepared under an OER Grant from the Tennessee Board of Regents by a team of faculty from Volunteer State Community College.

This source consists of an open textbook organized around making students successful writers. Topics include higher order concerns, such as the writing process and lower order concerns, such as advice on grammar and word choice.

This resource is useful in a first-year composition course. The examples are intended for a literature-based composition class. There are also examples of opening strategies intended for an expository composition class. The Word version will give both types of examples.

These course materials were designed for English Composition II at Southwest Tennessee Community College (Memphis, TN) by a team of faculty and support staff (Dr. Adam Sneed, Dr. Loretta McBride, Dr. Thomas Cole, & Vivian Stewart). This project was supported through grants from Southwest Tennessee Community College and the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR). Course resources include:a Writing and Research Handbook with practical writing instruction, links to reliable online writing resources, "remixed" content from other high-qualiity OER handbooks, and original content that helps students successfully navigate the writing resources available to them at Southwest Tennessee Community College, andfive assignment modules, each centered on one major writing assignment and supported by evaluative rubrics; low-stakes scaffolding assignments (prewritings, quizzes, and worksheets); guided peer review workshops; research guides that link to a mix of OER, OA, and ZTC sources available through library subscription services; and other materials.

Volumes in Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing offer multiple perspectives on a wide-range of topics about writing. In each chapter, authors present their unique views, insights, and strategies for writing by addressing the undergraduate reader directly. Drawing on their own experiences, these teachers-as-writers invite students to join in the larger conversation about the craft of writing. Consequently, each essay functions as a standalone text that can easily complement other selected readings in writing or writing-intensive courses across the disciplines at any level.
