STUDENT ACTIVITY - 1st -- VAThis is a distance-learning lesson students can complete at home.Students will collect data outdoors and record the data in a table. Students participate in a measurement lesson focusing on length. They use their feet as the unit of measurement for furniture in the classroom and at home. They then sketch the pieces of furniture they measured.

Student will watch the two video about area and perimeter. After they will construct their own pieces of each from graph paper. They must create their own animal within the graph paper. They will count the squares for the proper area and count along the outside for perimeter.

Square foot gardening is one way that ensures a vegetable garden bed can thrive. It is used to ensure not too many plants of a specific variety are planted in a single area. Using the square foot model keeps plants properly spaced, providing a perfect real-world context to teach area, apply multiplication strategies and have students work collaboratively. Most garden beds are 8 x 4 resulting in 32 square feet to work with. It is possible however to have beds of different sizes. While 32 square feet to work with is what is used in this lesson, the methods and chart can be used for any rectangular planting area.

This activity will help students apply their knowledge about arrays to a real-world situation. Students will design buildings and create an array of windows for eah building. Students will use the array to write an addition sentence and a multiplication equation to determine how many windows each building consist of.

The students will use their knowledge of repeated addition to determine the total number of objects in equal groups.

This assessment task can be used with a single student or a small group of students. Each student needs his or her own set of numeral cards.

This assessment may be used in a small group or whole group setting, give each student a piece of paper. Students who have trouble writing certain numbers can then get targeted practice.

This script for choral reading was written to be used with two groups of students. The script is based on the Feature Story, At Home in the Cold and discusses various adaptations that allow animals to survive in the cold oceans of the Arctic and Antarctica. The script is appropriate for use with students in grades K-1.
