Topography - Design Challenge
Introduction - Expanded learning opportunities (ELOs) have the potential to be the great equalizer in American education. Regular participation in high quality before and afterschool learning, and enriching summer school programs have been shown to help low-income students succeed academically on par with their more affluent peers. These programs, characterized by strong school-community partnerships, can also help high-performing students stay engaged and achieve even greater levels of understanding. In short, high-quality ELOs are for everyone - and the benefits they create are critical to Nebraska's future economy. - Beyond School Bells I would like to thank Beyond School Bells as well as Nebraska Innovation Studio for providing me with the opportunity, resources, and encouragement to develop this program as an Innovation Fellow. Their willingness to give the intellectual and creative freedom to build upon my ideas and inspirations is what enabled this program to exist. I strongly believe that opportunities such as the Innovation Fellowship are planting the seeds for Nebraska's future. -Dana Hoppe, Program Creator

Concept and Purpose - Interdisciplinary Learning: This program is focused on developing fundamental STEM skills through interdisciplinary learning. The truth is that all areas of study overlap significantly in one way or another, and the cognitive skills that lead to success in one area surely extend to other areas. A recurring theme I have noticed through my personal experience of being and artist as well as a scientist is that I have heavily utilized my creative thinking abilities to solve challenging problems. Imagination and creativity, when combined with background knowledge and understanding, allow us to find solutions that often lie beyond the rigid structure often associated with mathematics and the sciences. Once we begin to see the overlap between these areas, we begin building bridges between them and new ideas and applications emerge from a formerly empty space. The concept of topography was always interesting to me. The strangeness of being able to discern the shape of the land simply from the distance between a hypnotizing assortment of lines on a flat piece of paper was immediately intriguing. How does this flat sheet of abstract shapes translate to the three-dimensional complexity of a mountain, a valley, or a bluff? Topography is the platform of this program because it is a very versatile concept and can be used to create art and models representing a diverse range of fields. The activities in this program focus on having the students follow processes often found in Computer Science. Every process they complete can be thought of as an algorithm, and when they repeat steps, it can be thought of as a loop. They are also recursively calling the same function on each resulting piece they create, mimicking the concept of dynamic programing. The permutation matrix activities will familiarize students with moving through the data in a matrix and adding data to stacks. While they are doing all of these activities, however, there will be no jargon they have to learn, and they will probably not even realize until they take their first Computer Science course that it is even related. To the students, they will simply be creating art in a new and interesting way.

NEBRASKA HONORS PROGRAM CLC EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITY CLUBS INFORMATION SHEET:
Name of Club: Girls Who Code

Age/Grade Level: 3rd-5th

Number of Attendees: (ideal number) Between 5 and 10; no more than 15

Goal of the Club: (learning objectives/outcomes) Encourage girls to be confident in themselves and their abilities while teaching them basic concepts used in computer science.

Resources: (Information for club provided by) Girls Who Code curriculum, Scratch tutorials, individual research

Content Areas: (check all that apply)

☐ Arts (Visual, Music, Theater & Performance)
☐ Literacy
☒ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)
☐ Social Studies
☐ Wellness (Physical Education, Health, Nutrition & Character Education)
Outputs or final products: (Does the club have a final product/project to showcase to community?) There are a few Scratch and Made With Code projects that the girls can save on their account or a USB drive.

Introducing your Club/Activities: At the beginning of each club, we have a tech spotlight which highlights a woman in tech and what she’s known for (usually someone from computer science). We also have an icebreaker question about something random to get the girls’ attention and get them involved before jumping right into the activity for the day.

General Directions: If you’re unfamiliar with computer science, make sure to research or try the tutorial activities on your own so you are prepared for club. From there, each club is pretty structured in that you do the icebreaker question, a tech spotlight, and then the activity.

Tips/Tricks: If a girl doesn’t like an activity on a certain day, ask them what they’d like to see more of in the club; let the students know that you care about their opinion and that you want them to have fun. If the girls are really rowdy or get way off track, try to get them back into the activity, and if they don’t listen you can be a little more stern with them. Each group is different though, so make sure you find a balance. If you want your students to be able to save their work, make sure they can either create a Scratch account or have a folder on their computers they can save their projects to.

Outputs or final products: The club did not have a final product, but during many of the weekly experiments we made items the children could take home to show their friends and family.

Introducing your Club/Activities: I led a science club to two groups of kids at separate times. Through experimentation I taught the kids basic natural science fundamentals. We did an experiment each week and a mini lesson to describe the experiment after.

General Directions: Each week once we got to the classroom I took attendance, introduced what we were doing that day, then performed either a demonstration or an experiment with the students. After the experiment was finished we cleaned up then I explained how and why the experiments worked the way they did.

Tips/Tricks: While working through the experiments it worked out best to perform each step with the students and all work at the same pace.

WELCOME

Welcome to the facilitator guide of the Mind Craft program. This is approximately an 8 week program, depending on the pace of your group. Loosely based off of popular games like SimCity and Minecraft, is a program that allows students to create their own communities and build up their society from scratch using hands on activities. Each week a task is given to them to build their society. It will start o from scratch where they have to think of tools that enable building a society, and by 8th week, they’ll have functioning buildings and rules. This program aims to touch base on skills involving art, engineering, and teamwork interaction. By the end of each session, students should have used skills involving teamwork, leadership, and creativity. This is an incremental program where students will be building on top of their project. It would be ideal to have a place to store their project as they continue growing it. It may be possible to disassemble the project if needed though.
