In this lab students will practice interviewing a partner, as well as work and groups to plan an event. Students will begin by doing a warm up where they interview one another and introduce one another to the class. Then, students will pair up to create an invitation to an event and share their event with other students.

In this activity students will look through a series of brochures for tour trips to different cities in China. As a group, they will chose which cities they would like to go to which tours, and decide what modes of transportation they will take. They will then create a travel itinerary for their entire group.

"Climate change stands to have a tremendous impact on the world’s freshwater ecosystems. To understand how, researchers analyzed 15,289 functional genes related to nutrient cycling and stress processes gathered from biofilm microbes across mountainside streams in Norway, Spain, and China. With increasing elevation, microbial functional diversity tended to decline, and the composition of functional gene assemblages tended to differ more with greater elevational distances. These variations were more drastic as the environmental differences between the lowlands and the peaks increased. The best predictors of these variations appear to be climatic factors, such as temperature during the growing season. and winter precipitation. "Antibiotic resistance is a growing public health problem. By the year 2050, more than 10 million people are expected to die from resistant infections. How are researchers tackling that problem? One team is looking at the gut bacteria found in migratory birds. Migratory birds acquire and spread antibacterial resistance genes from their environment with the gut microbiome, serving as a reservoir for these insidious genes. To understand the role of the gut microbiome, researchers gathered fecal samples from migratory birds and their favorite landing spots in China. Genetic analysis revealed 1030 distinct genes conferring resistance to antibiotics including tetracycline, aminoglycoside, β-lactam, and sulfonamide. While the microbes detected in the guts of birds were less diverse than those found in their surroundings, birds carried a greater number of antibiotic resistance genes..."

In this activity, students will play a bingo game in order to help practice recognizing radicals used in Chinese characters. Students will be shown a radical, and will then search for a vocabulary word that contains that radical. "Nearly 12% of adults in China have type-2 diabetes, and fewer than half of them have it well-managed. That makes them good candidates for insulin therapy, especially a type known as basal insulin, which uses long- or intermediate-acting insulin to keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day. But it hasn’t been clear how useful that treatment is under real-world conditions. Now, a recently completed observational trial in China finds that the therapy successfully lowers blood sugar, although dosing challenges remain. Researchers recruited nearly 20,000 patients from across China who had been on oral diabetes medications, and were willing to try basal insulin to better control their disease. Because the team wanted to see how well the therapy could work in a realistic setting, each patient worked with his or her own doctor to come up with a personalized plan.
