This site from the BBC hosts a brief primer on the Arabic language. It discusses such topics as where the language is spoke, where it came from, and tips on etiquette. The guide also includes interesting examples of the Arabic language, such as tongue twisters, jokes, and famous quotations.

This page contains a list of all the letters in the Arabic alphabet, organized in seven groups. Users can listen to a native speaker read the names of the letters online or download the clips for home use. Users can also print out selected letters. The site also lists information about writing in Arabic, including the short vowel system, joining the Arabic letters together, and the names for symbols commonly used in email addresses.

This is a list of twenty survival phrases in Arabic. They are all transliterated as well as written in Arabic script, and are meant for the very beginner. The website includes a printable page for all 20 phrases as well as a downloadable MP3 file with all of the spoken phrases. It is intended those who are going abroad to the Middle East and wish to have a survival list.

This activity aligns with a novice-level unit about food. The infographic shows options for each meal. Students select what they would like to eat for each meal during one day.

There is great need to understand individuals' functional language abilities, not only in education but in commerce and public policy discussion. The aim is to quantify language use patterns, proficiency, and dominance in the two languages of bilinguals. The Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) is an instrument for assessing language dominance through self-reports that is concise, quick, and easy to use. The BLP is intended to produce a continuous dominance score and a general bilingual profile taking into account a variety of linguistic variables. The BLP is an open and free assessment tool for researchers, educators, and anyone with an interest in assessing language dominance.

The Bing translator can translate to and from 39 different languages. The program can translate words, phrases, idioms, and complete sentences with a high degree of accuracy. An audio component is included for English words. The most commonly used translated word is given for translated words and phrases, i.e. 'fill' for ___ instead of 'work'.

This activity is designed for advanced or heritage language learners. Students select a biography of personal interest from biografiascortas.com and complete an organizer. Two options are included.

This is a website that connects language learners to tutors, language exchanges, a language learning blog, a forum for asking language questions, and a word of the day option. Arabic word of the day options are currently only available in MSA; Egyptian and Syrian dialects are forthcoming. Games are not currently available for Arabic on the site.

This module is aimed at students in year 1 semester B (beginners Portuguese). The varied exercises cover a range of topics from a solar eclipse to the Portuguese language. The transcript reader of the listening exercises allows students to identify words/passages they find difficult to understand.

Byki Express is a program for beginning language learners. The program consists of pre-made flashcard lists that the user can both read and listen to. The flashcards include pictures, and users can track which cards theyŐve listened to and learned. New user names can be imported into the program so that different learners can use the same program on the same computer. One can also import lists. There is a possibility of an upgrade (for a fee). Arabic and many other languages are available. PC and Mac compatible.

The CAL Oral Proficiency Exam (COPE) measures listening and speaking skills and is offered for various languages, Arabic being one of them. The exam can be administered to students at an intermediate proficiency level in the 5-7th grade. The length of the exam is 15-20 minutes per pair of students.

The CAST exam measures speaking skills and is offered for various languages, Arabic being one of them. The exam can be administered to students at an intermediate and advanced proficiency level who are in the 10-12th grade, students in college, and to professionals. The length of the exam is 30 minutes and it is rated by a CAST assessor or by a teacher/reviewer. The exams are anonymous and results are sent by e-mail automatically after rating.

The CJK Dictionary Institute was originally established for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) resources, but has been expanded in recent years to other languages, including Arabic. The many Arabic resources available through the CJK Dictionary Institute include databases of proper nouns, transliteration programs, dictionaries, databases, articles related to transcription and translation issues, and more. The institute also provides software developers with dictionary data as well as consulting services.

Calligraphy Qallam offers visitors information about the Arabic alphabet, various styles of scripts, and the process and history of calligraphy. It offers tutorial videos which demonstrate the various shapes of the Arabic characters both within one script and between different scripts. There is also a "script quiz" which allows visitors to test their ability to recognize different calligraphic scripts. The site also includes a blog and a forum where topics surrounding calligraphy are discussed.
