Students use balloons to perform several simple experiments to explore static electricity and charge polarization.

The purpose of this task is for students to "Solve problems involving the four operations" (3.OA.A) and "Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories" (3.MD.3). Additionally, students will engage in MP3, Model with mathematics. In this task students are asked to decide how to spend $1,000 on supplies and materials for their classroom; students will have to make choices and be careful not to exceed the budget. Students are asked to decide which supplies will benefit the class the most and will compare their choices with other students' choices.

Students will explore the concepts of place value using their bodies as tools. They will time themselves performing various kinesthetic tasks like jumping jacks and sit ups and use the numbers that they record from these activities in their exploration. They will also come up with creative ways to represent numbers using the properties of operation and the rules of place value.

The intent of clarifying statements is to provide additional guidance for educators to communicate the intent of the standard to support the future development of curricular resources and assessments aligned to the 2021 math standards.  Clarifying statements can be in the form of succinct sentences or paragraphs that attend to one of four types of clarifications: (1) Student Experiences; (2) Examples; (3) Boundaries; and (4) Connection to Math Practices.

This task serves as a bridge between understanding place-value and using strategies based on place-value structure for addition.
