Seminars exploring current research and topical issues in the biomedical sciences, addressed at the general theme of innovation. Seminars are organized in blocks with related content, and are presented by prominent outside speakers as well as by HST faculty members and graduate students. Each seminar block includes several semi-weekly presentations, in addition to wide-ranging discussions among speakers, faculty, and students. Discussions involve issues such as relations between presented research areas, requirements for further advances in the "state of the art", the role of enabling technologies, the responsible practice of biomedical research, and career paths in the biomedical sciences. This Science NetLinks lesson introduces students to the ethical implications of using ... More

This Science NetLinks lesson introduces students to the ethical implications of using our growing knowledge about the human genome to improve our personal and public health. Students will be asked to consider numerous ethical issues related to genetic testing and will find that there are no easy answers. Most importantly, students will learn that there is no one "answer" to an ethical question; rather, there exist a multitude of perspectives that must be taken into account. Ultimately, students will learn that making an ethical choice requires scientific knowledge and rational inquiry. Less

Societal support for traditional childhood immunization is changing. Increasingly, parents are renegotiating recommended immunization schedules with pediatricians. Marcuse, also associate medical director at Seattle Children's Hospital, discusses this hesitancy and the potential consequences for disease prevention. In this videotaped lecture, he also addresses balancing parental rights with protecting public health. This lecture was part of the Howard A. Schneiderman Memorial Bioethics Lecture Series, which began in 1990 with an endowment from Schneiderman, the third biological sciences school dean. The series brings renowned experts to UCI to speak about the social and ethical implications of advances in biology and medicine. Less

One of the fastest-growing areas of medical research is that of genetic testing and gene therapy. This chapter introduces students to this area of DNA research and helps them explore the related ethical issues. Scientists have recently completed a preliminary ‰ŰĎmap‰Ű of all the genes in the human body. This is also known as the Human Genome Project and consists of all the sequences of DNA chemical units that tell a cell how to behave. This accomplishment has incredible benefits. However, it also raises new, complex issues that society cannot ignore. Less
