Shedding light on microbial dark matter in Shark Bay, Australia

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"Microbial mats are windows to our past of the earliest ecosystems to evolve on earth, especially those found in Shark Bay, Australia. Here, these lush mats are shedding light into the lives of microbes that are yet to be cultured in the lab, an untapped resource of biological information known as “microbial dark matter”. In a new study, researchers reconstructed 115 genomes belonging to members of this microbial dark matter. The researchers detected entirely new microorganisms that may participate in sulfate reduction, microbes capable of fermenting and degrading organic carbon, and microbes with a high capacity for producing hydrogen. Overall, the results suggest that microbial dark matter could play critical roles in nutrient cycling across the planet. Further genomics studies could place novel microorganisms found in microbial mats into their proper ecological and environmental context and offer clues on how to cultivate these microbes in the lab for closer examination..."

Social and emotional learning involves skills such as children distinguishing their own needs from those of others, learning to effectively identify and manage emotions, and building and maintaining positive relationships with others.

You can use this early childhood learning trajectory to observe children’s progress in social and emotional learning, and to plan the next steps in their learning and development.

Ultrasound Physics and its Application in Medicine

Ultrasound has a wide range of medical applications. Some of these include obstetrics (monitoring the progress of pregnancy), oncology (monitoring the growth of tumors), cardiology (visualizing the heart function and physiology), biopsy (guiding needles in various procedures), and physiotherapy. For example, today, an estimated 60-70% of pregnant women in the United States undergo ultrasound examination during pregnancy. An estimated 250 million fetal ultrasound examinations are performed every year in the USA. In the last few decades, ultrasound technology has expanded to medical imaging in various other specialties: Anesthesiology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, General Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN), Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Physiatry, Sports Medicine, and Surgery. The increasing demand in the use of ultrasound technology in various biomedical fields points to a future in which medical professionals will be required to possess a general knowledge of ultrasound technology. While currently most medical professionals rely on technicians to perform the imaging studies, there can be a high degree of operator dependent results. Therefore, a solid foundation of the technological properties of ultrasound would give health care providers a competitive advantage in the future. This is one of the first goals of this textbook. This textbook also covers general aspects of diagnostic ultrasound providing an excellent reference for both beginners and professionals. In addition, this textbook has end-of-the-chapter experiments that will help educators conduct labs for students and any other learners to enhance their learning and solidify the practical skills.

"Apprenticeships are a common tool for skill development and social interaction But automation, globalisation, the growing importance of the service sector, human migration, and new forms of employment like the gig economy are changing how the world does business It's not clear whether current apprenticeship systems can survive these developments New research in the International Journal of Training and Development looks at how the institution of apprenticeship has adapted to the rapidly changing economy, labour market, and education system Using this information, the work examines how the evolving world of business could disrupt apprenticeship systems or make them less relevant in the 21st century Although more empirical research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn the work offers a preliminary framework detailing the readiness of the current apprenticeship system for ‘future work’ conditions… and questions whether the necessary adaptations of apprenticeship systems might affect.."
