All of these children are part of U.S. child labor history, where many children were exploited by companies, working long 10-12, sometimes 16 hours shifts for as little as pennies a day. These kids were exploited until unions and federal and state labor laws protected kids. From 1870 – 1890, child labor increased three fold. 1870 was the 1st U.S. census that reported child labor statistics, and 750,000 children worked. Child labor peaked in 1900 when 18.2% of all U.S. kids under the age of 16 WORKED, often at very dangerous jobs.

As part of this seven-lesson unit, which is designed to be facilitated over 10-15 days, students examine several underreported global news stories of human interest that focus upon the displacement of youth worldwide. They also evaluate how this displacement fosters both individual and collective empowerment for positive social change. Students process their analysis through the creation of original videos and scripts that capture personal connections they have made to themes in the articles they explored.

The Wild at Heart Adventure forms part of The Manhood Experience which consists of six experiential training courses. It is the third course in this series and follows In the Heart of a Man (Part one) and Reclaiming Manhood (Part two). The Wild at Heart Adventure (Part three).  In this manual we include only the course content. Please refer to all the introductory comments, preparation notes, debriefing and follow through processes, team building, logistical details, safety procedures, and comments on the use of this material given in the accompanying The Manhood Experience training manual (Part one, course three). This information forms a vital part in the delivery of this course and is not repeated here.

This lesson allows students to delve into the life of a current or historical member of Congress. Biography can be a powerful too that can impact a person. The Members of Congress categories include: youngest, women, African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Asian/Pacific Islander Americans, former athletes, former entertainers and Independents/third party. Students should conduct research and then either write a report, give a presentation (or do both) as an assessment. The lesson provides names for each category, a sample rubric and recommended website resources for research.
