Being able to ask important questions and discover their answers through critical thinking and utilization of available data and information are important and useful skills in health education, science education, and in life. This lesson begins that process with a focus on health topics, particularly substance use/misuse/abuse and mental health, however, the science and engineering practices identified in this lesson transcend into other science disciplines. This lesson focuses on the development of important questions and then analyzing/locating sources of information to help answer those questions.

During these lessons, students will explore how and why policies are made at varying levels of government and society.  Particular attention will be paid to policies that impact peoples’ health and well-being, especially mental health and substance use, misuse, and abuse.

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to learn about one such game, which is often called double ball in English. Double ball is a team sport that is similar to the contemporary game of lacrosse, in that it involves multiple players using long sticks and a ball, with the purpose—in most versions—of getting the ball across a goal line or through some sort of target. Many tribes, including several in Oregon, played a version of double ball and continue to do so today.While focused on physical education, this lesson reinforces two important concepts that are woven throughout this curriculum. First, students will learn that while there are many similarities across tribal nations and Indigenous communities— including some of the games they play—Native American people are far from homogeneous and in fact represent a rich diversity of unique cultures. Second, students will be encouraged to think about how the specific natural environment in which a given tribe lived—its ancestral territory— shaped its identity and culture in both large and small ways. Understanding this strong connection to place is essential to understanding and respecting Native American cultures in Oregon and across North America, past and present.

In this lesson, students will learn about and practice the fundamentals of healthy communication and boundary-setting in order to strengthen healthy relationship skills. Students will identify characteristics of healthy & unhealthy relationships.

Communicate Boundaries and Practice Consent: Setting and respecting boundaries of all types – physical, digital, emotional – are central to a healthy relationship. Practicing affirmative consent is one form of establishing boundaries that requires being a respectful “asker” and “receiver.”

Help a friend in an unhealthy relationship: We all play a critical role in supporting our friends to be in healthy relationships. To effectively help our friends, we need to recognize when they are experiencing or engaging in unhealthy behaviors. We then need to have the courage to have the conversation and the knowledge of how to safely intervene as a bystander.

Know the Signs, Spot the Signs: Understand the 10 Signs of a Healthy and Unhealthy Relationship and be able to recognize them in your life and in the relationships around you.

Navigate endings: Whether in a defined relationship, situationship, hook-up, or “a thing” — navigating endings can be difficult, and handling rejection is always tough. Understanding when and how to end a relationship requires thoughtful decision-making under stressful circumstances, even more so when the relationship might be dangerous and there is a need for safety planning.

Practice Healthy Relationship Behaviors: Everyone deserves to be in healthy relationships. This means having the knowledge and skills to: (1) live the 10 Signs of a Healthy Relationship, (2) set expectations for what we deserve in a relationship, and (3) build a healthy relationship with ourselves.

This unit provides an introduction to hiking and all it's benefits. Over the course of 5 lessons, students will learn about exercise intensity and perseverance, hiking etiquette, and map reading. The lessons culminate in a suggested hiking field trip.

In this lesson, students will research how famous families came to be. They’ll work with their peers to uncover details about fertilization, gestation, and birth, as well as other aspects of the famous family’s story. Students will then demonstrate (orally or written) their understanding of the concepts from the past two lessons. They will also reflect on the role celebrities play in shaping our thoughts, feelings and behaviors around reproduction and families.

This first lesson (of three) explains sexual and reproductive anatomy, and human reproduction via penis-in-vagina sexual intercourse (PIV sex). During this lesson, the educator will model the use of respectful, inclusive concepts and language to describe the process of human reproduction and family formation.

This lesson details the basics of healthy relationships: what they are and how to recognize them. It also covers consent, boundaries, power dynamics, red flags, and characteristics of different kinds of relationships. Students will engage in discussions and activities in which they will identify characteristics and assess the health of relationships in brief scenarios.

Spikeball is a game that can be played on beaches, college campuses, city parks, anywhere you have room! Here we will practice some basic ball handling techniques and cooperative activity to build the skills necessary to play Spikeball.

Skipping is a big part of a young studentŐs readiness to move on to other activities, such as reading. This activity will give students opportunities to develop their skipping skills.

The lesson provides a refresher on basic anatomy, as well as the processes of ovulation, menstruation, and pregnancy. It goes through the stages of pregnancy, and the pregnancy options available to Oregon residents. The lesson ends with a Jeopardy-style lesson recap.

The lesson presents a definition of sex and asserts consent is a key aspect of healthy sexual experiences. Students will define the various parts of consent and review Oregon’s laws regarding consent, sex, and minors. They will investigate what influences their decisions about sex, and will then follow a fictional couple through various decision-making processes around deciding to or not to have sex, the use of birth control, pregnancy options, and decisions around parenting. Students will also research local reproductive and sexual health clinics.
