This open resources textbook contains 10 Units that describe and explain the main concepts in statistical analysis of psychological data (managing data, measures of central tendency, measures of spread, correlations, simple linear regression). In addition to conceptual descriptions and explanations of the basic analyses for descriptive statistics, this textbook also explains how to conduct those analyses with common statistical software (Excel) and open-source free software (R). This book is directed to undergraduates studying basic statistics, especially basic statistics in psychological research.

In this unit, students will read and interpret primary sources to address the question “How do we measure the attainment of human rights?” By exploring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN’s Guide to Indicators of Human Rights, and data about development indicators from multiple databases, students will unpack the complexities of using indicators to measure human rights.

This collection of spreadsheet-based labs was funded as part of the Digital Learning Research Network (dLRN) made possible by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The labs were adapted from the Statistics book, “Introduction to Statistics,” published by OpenStax College. The original labs used graphing calculators and were found within the book after each chapter. These interactive spreadsheet-based labs are effective for online and face-face courses.
