During this single day lesson plan, students will be hypothesizing, preparing and comparing the usage of fats within baked products. Students will be asked to hypothesize the potential results of saturated versus unsaturated fats within a chocolate chip cookie recipe. Throughout the lesson, students will be completing a follow along lab packet. Said packet contains the following: lab plan/hypothesis sheet, recipe, lab notes sheet, and reflection sheet. The goal of this activity is to demystify the science behind Punnett Squares and explore data and statistical representations in genetics and heredity. Begin by breeding two parent mice and observe the ratios in the pie chart as more offspring are bred in each litter. Compare the ratios between different pairs of parents and identify how they are different or similar. Finally, use the simulation controls to show gametes and reveal how each offspring obtained its genotype from its parents.

This is a project based course designed to help middle school students explore career options using the Nebraska Career Education Model and understand the Nebraska Career Readiness Standards. The course is organized by three themes – Making it My Choice, A World of Options and Charting a Direction – with culminating individual and group projects.
