Rating
0.0 stars

This writing course for advanced students of ESOL offers an integrated approach to metacognition and critical thinking skills, research and source evaluation skills, standard composition and grammar skills, and academic vocabulary skills.

After some preliminary activities, each unit follows a regular routine:

-warm-up writing prompts that review previous concepts and generate authentic writing from which to observe and discuss common grammar and mechanics
-vocabulary lessons that present useful academic words that also appear in the texts
-big-picture concepts for college writing adapted specifically for ESOL learners from Amy Guptill's Writing in
College: From Competence to Excellence
-grammar lessons that review the basics and then focus on clauses
-composition lessons based on moving from five-paragraph essays toward organic research papers, again adapted from Amy Guptill's Writing in College: From Competence to Excellence
-"getting ready to write" lessons focused on research, source evaluation, reported speech, and academic
formatting
-essay writing/editing prompts
-self-reflection writing/editing prompts

Literature Done In English

The study of English literature has numerous benefits. When studying poetry, students learn about syllables, sounds, and how to choose between words that have similar meanings yet differ in nuance. Taking a glance at prose gives students a look at what some great historical authors had to say and how the way these authors expressed themselves lent significance to their messages.

This short textbook was written for an English for Academic Purposes class for high school students in Japan. It could easily be used in a quarter or trimester. Nothing is dependent on the country. One term is a short time for such a vast field. Yet, if our students develop some appreciation for English literature, it will surely be a benefit to them. Hemingway once wrote, “There are many kinds of stories in this book. I hope that you will find some that you like.”

A good way to learn to do math in English is to do math in English. The topics and materials should be accessible but engaging. This gives us incentive to make tangents into gambling, game theory, computers, art, and any other fields where we see connections. Interdisciplinary applied mathematics can be found within these pages.

This book was written for high school students in Japan studying English for Applied Purposes, so that they could potentially take math classes when studying abroad in the future. However, nothing in the book depends on the country.

Each unit begins with a chapter of fiction about a teacher and students in one ESL class. Reading comprehension and reading skills exercises follow. Prefix and suffix vocabulary-focus exercises are included. Academic Word List vocabulary exercises help students build a strong foundation in both receptive and productive knowledge. The following chapters in each unit expand on unit themes through non-fiction articles focusing on academic preparation, international experiences, and cultural adjustment. Vocabulary is repeated and comprehension and reading skills are further practiced.

Language study can be divided into four parts: reading, speaking, listening, and writing. Where reasonable, we try to make use of and develop all four of these skills. Through practice, students can become well rounded and increasingly proficient at expressing themselves in English and more generally in their lives. In this book, we focus on critical thinking and clean writing. The last four chapters are a short introduction to philosophy, and they can be a significant leap in difficulty compared with prior chapters.

This book is designed as an English for Academic Purposes class for ESL high school students living in Japan, with a focus on critical thinking and writing. However, there's nothing specific about Japan in the book, and it could be used in other countries just as easily.

A good way to learn to do science in English is to do science in English. When students are doing things, they are engaged, and that is when learning occurs. This book has three parts: biology, physics, and earth science. I have tried to select topics that don't require any specific background knowledge. The pieces are independent. Take whatever looks best for you and forget about the rest.

This book was written for a tenth grade English for Academic Purposes class in Japan. However, there is nothing country-specific in the book. It could reasonably be used in a quarter or trimester.

To complete the course ECUR 415.3: Current Issues in EAL, students are required to submit a final paper that reflects their growing knowledge about English as an Additional Language (EAL). EAL is the term used in Saskatchewan to describe students who speak languages other than English and require adequate levels of English to be successful with the school curriculum.

Most students enrolled in the online course ECUR 415 are practicing teachers who are working toward a Post-Degree Certificate in EAL Education (PDCEAL), while continuing to live and work in various locations both within and outside of the province. The certificate program, offered through the College of Education, University of Saskatchewan, is recognized by provincial education authorities as being equivalent to one full year of post-degree study. As such, the certificate equips teachers with the knowledge and expertise to be considered teacher-specialists of EAL Education. The course ECUR 415 also attracts some pre-service teachers who are pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree and have an interest in EAL Education.
