Common Core Curriculum Grade 2 ELA: Listening and Learning Strand

The Listening and Learning Strand consists of a series of read_alouds organized by topics (called domains), many of which are informational in nature. The goal of the Listening and Learning Strand is for students to acquire language competence through listening, specifically building a rich vocabulary, and broad knowledge in history and science by being exposed to carefully selected, sequenced, and coherent read_alouds. The 9 units (or domains) provide lessons (including images and texts), as well as instructional objectives, core vocabulary, and assessment materials. The domain topics include: Fighting for a Cause; Fairy Tales and Tall Tales; Cycles in Nature; Insects; Ancient Greek Civilizations; Greek Myths; Charlotte's Web; and Immigration.

Second Grade: Preservation Problem Solvers

The purpose of Preservation Problem Solvers is to encourage students to use leadership and resourceful behaviors to think like a scientist. This module extends the Essential Strategies of Attributes, Questioning, and Creative Problem Solving that were introduced in Kindergarten and First Grade. This module is meant for all students. The classroom teacher should work with a specialist or special educator to find or develop alternate activities or resources for visually impaired students, where appropriate.

Second Grade: Tremendous Trees

The purpose of Tremendous Trees or Tree-mendous Trees, as it is sometimes called, is to encourage students to use inquisitive and creative behavior, to think like a scientist. The module extends the Essential Strategies of Attributes and Questioning that were introduced in Kindergarten and First Grade. Students use questions to approach problems and identify attributes to sort, classify, and make inferences to create analogies on observational data about our world. This module is meant for all students. The classroom teacher should work with a specialist or special educator to find or develop alternate activities or resources for visually impaired students, where appropriate.

Story Problems Made Interesting

After introducing students to story problem strategies, students will be asked to write their own story problem(s). The problems must deal with real life situations. Fantasy worlds and silly situations are not allowed. Each student must also be able to solve their own problem(s). If the problems are not entered into a computer and saved on a disk by the students, then the teacher will compile groups of problems for the students to solve. The author's name of each problem should be attached to the problem. If a student needs help solving a problem, he/she is only allowed to ask the author of that problem for assistance.
