In this lesson, students will demonstrate their understanding of loyalty through discussion with their peers. This lesson is based on a video about the friendship between Carl Erskine and his friend, Johnny Wilson.

This is a three-credit course which covers topics that enhance the students’ problem solving abilities, knowledge of the basic principles of probability/statistics, and guides students to master critical thinking/logic skills, geometric principles, personal finance skills. This course requires that students apply their knowledge to real-world problems. A TI-84 or comparable calculator is required. The course has four main units: Thinking Algebraically, Thinking Logically and Geometrically, Thinking Statistically, and Making Connections. This course is paired with a course in MyOpenMath which contains the instructor materials (including answer keys) and online homework system with immediate feedback. All course materials are licensed by CC-BY-SA unless otherwise noted.

In this project, students will have the opportunity to reflect on culturally responsive education practices. Note that this project may require very little math (depending on what adaptations are necessary to the OER), but will help students evaluate their roles in contributing to OER materials and furthering DEI practices. There are two parts to this project: 1) evaluating the current level of cultural responsiveness of an OER or the curriculum and 2) adapting an OER to be more culturally responsive. You can have students evaluate one OER (well suited if students are working individually) or the entire curriculum (well suited if students are working in teams). Regardless of whether students are working individually or as a team, they are likely to only have time to adapt one OER.

In this lesson, students will work together in a least restrictive environment to promote friendship and collaboration.

In this lesson, students will take action to demonstrate kindness to others in their school community. Additionally, students will use basic math skills of skip counting and/or multiplication to tally their actions.

In this lesson, students investigate non-profits that serve a local or global need. They conduct a web quest on a specific non-profit, answer worksheet questions, and then develop a presentation for a mock donor. This lesson is meant to be cross-curricular, intending students to select a non-profit covering a topic being studied in another course. Examples include food scarcity, lack of clean water, or cultural norms ignoring girls’ education.

This guide is intended as a strategic planning tool for district leaders wishing to promote the already pedagogically and financially compelling practice of creating or adapting open educational resources (OER) to help achieve district goals in serving all students through diversity, equity, inclusion, or accessibility (DEIA) lens.  The guide provides step-by-step planning tools, including examples, templates, and resources to help district leaders articulate and establish action plans for what we refer to as "OER-DEIA."  The entire guide is an open educational resource itself, free and openly licensed for reuse, remixing, and resharing.

In this lesson, students will observe a social group and identify the common traits shared by the group. They will compare the common traits and daily challenges of a group different from their own self-identified group to connect the meaningfulness of perseverance in varying contexts and people.

About 15% of the world’s population lives with some form of disability.  Many are not having their needs met because of barriers to participation in rituals, worship and faith community activities at their places of worship. To truly empower people with disabilities to become agents of positive change in their local communities, we recognize that everyone has a role to play. Our Doors Are Open seminar helps all faith communities to understand how to open their mind, hearts, and doors to people with all kinds of abilities. Traditionally, faith communities position people with disabilities as recipients of care and not as givers. Most faith communities do not have proper representation of people with disabilities throughout their activities despite a desire to be open and inclusive. This disparity is often the result of lack of understanding of how to think about disability differently. In this seminar, students will learn the social model of disability, which positions disability as a function of exclusively designed environments rather than a lack of ability. Our Doors Are Open Seminar will guide students on how to see their activities and situations through an inclusive lens as well as how to take actions to improve inclusion and achieve the welcoming goals of congregations.

Carl shares stories about his childhood friend Johnny Wilson, his days as a Dodger pitcher and his teammate Jackie Robinson. He takes us on the journey from the day his son Jimmy was born through their experience with Special Olympics. In this lesson, students will demonstrate their understanding of perseverance by reviewing the lives and actions of significant figures facing hardships requiring perseverance. The lesson includes a graphic organizer and an exit ticket. This lesson is based on a video about the life of Carl Erskine and perseverance, The Parallel book, and students’ research and perceptions of the concept. 

After reading Playing for Change, students will have the opportunity to break into groups and do research about various subgroups and topics provided in the text. The intention is for this to be a jigsaw activity where groups can organize their information with the interactive notebook sheets provided, and then present or share with the class what they have learned. Teachers can use this for language arts or social studies assessments, if needed.
