The pamphlet begins with two letters written by Paul the Apostle in which Christianity first acquires a universal address. The new religion came to exclude people who were not Christians from the count of the human. This became explicit around a thousand years later when Pope Urban II authorised the First Crusade.

In 1492 planetary history was split in to two. Muhammad XII of Granada conceded defeat to Isabella and Ferdinand, the Catholic monarchs of Portugal and Spain, who went on to expel the Jews from the territory under their control. Europe became a Christian project. In the same year Christopher Columbus arrived in the Caribbean and Europe also became an imperial project with a planetary reach.

The origins of the racial ideology can be seen in this period, in which ideas about religion came to be entangled with fantastical ideas about the imagined purity of blood. But it was in the English colony of Virginia in the seventeenth century that the legitimation for the exclusion from the count of the human began to move from claims made in the name of religion to claims made in the name of science. This is the point at which modern racism, rooted in the appearance of the body, began to cast its malignant shadow across the planet.

Incorporé en 1958, L’Entraide missionnaire a réalisé un parcours remarquable au service de la solidarité internationale grâce à l’engagement soutenu de ses membres, des personnes responsables de la permanence et un grand nombre de collaboratrices et collaborateurs à travers le monde. En 2015, suite à une lecture collective des signes des temps, les membres de L’Entraide missionnaire ont pris la décision d’entamer un processus de transmission d’héritage avant de fermer l’organisme au printemps 2018.

En offrant un échantillon, certes très limité, des trésors qui se trouvent dans les archives de L’Entraide missionnaire, cette anthologie présente 60 textes classés chronologiquement reflétant des préoccupations sociales, politiques et spirituelles en évolution. Huntington’s ‘Clash of Civilizations’ thesis, and to appraise its validity and shortcomings 25 years after the publication of his landmark article.The notion of a ‘clash of civilizations’ is examined from a multidisciplinary perspective. Comparative Politics: A Practical Guide for a Globalizing World is perhaps the first introductory textbook in comparative politics to be written with an emphasis on case studies from the Global South and other alternative perspectives. It was inspired by my own experience as a student and professor who had the privilege to live, learn, and work in places as diverse as Bangladesh, Egypt, and Germany. My experience in each country provided an important contribution to my own understanding of political science, perhaps in more important ways than my formal political science education. It was written with the belief that political science has focused too heavily on developing theories and models based primarily on the “Western” world to the detriment of both the discipline as well as students. 21st century students are learning and living in an increasingly globalized world in which traditional notions of statehood, development, elections, and more are rapidly changing and facing deep contestation. Following the calls to “decolonize” its sister discipline, International Relations, it is both timely and imperative that comparative politics follows suit. While traditional approaches offer important lessons about the nature of government and political processes, this text believes that the Global South has much to offer in the way of what politics looks like in the face of social unrest, increasing inequality, disputed legitimacy, climate change and other 21st century challenges that the Global North can no longer ignore. Another unique aspect of this textbook is that it contains contributions from students from Colorado Mesa University, a rural institution in Western Colorado primarily focused on undergraduate and first-generation education, with edits and additions from myself. Therefore, this book is written both by and for students of first-generation and minority-serving institutions.

POLS 261 Course Description: In this course, we will explore contemporary comparative politics. Comparative politics is the study of different political systems outside of the United States, with the goal of comparing these different systems in order to better understand the advantages and disadvantages of how various political systems are designed. We will focus on several questions that have been central to this sub-field of political science including democratization and democratic stability, how states vary in their political institutions on a constitutional, electoral, administrative, and party level, and what explains the persistence of ethnicity and causes of civil conflict. Students will use cases from various global regions and employ comparative research methods.
