Getting Started

Type of Unit: Introduction

Prior Knowledge

Students should be able to:

Solve and write numerical equations for whole number addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems.
Use parentheses to evaluate numerical expressions.
Identify and use the properties of operations.

Lesson Flow

In this unit, students are introduced to the rituals and routines that build a successful classroom math community and they are introduced to the basic features of the digital course that they will use throughout the year.

An introductory card sort activity matches students with their partner for the week. Then over the course of the week, students learn about the lesson routines: Opening, Work Time, Ways of Thinking, Apply the Learning, Summary of the Math, and Reflection. Students learn how to present their work to the class, the importance of taking responsibility for their own learning, and how to effectively participate in the classroom math community.

Students then work on Gallery problems to further explore the program’s technology resources and tools and learn how to organize their work.

The mathematical work of the unit focuses on numerical expressions, including card sort activities in which students identify equivalent expressions and match an expression card to a word card that describes its meaning. Students use the properties of operations to identify equivalent expressions and to find unknown values in equations.

Carrie and Kelly’s OER grant project will create open materials for Math 098. Community colleges throughout Oregon have been planning and implementing MTH 098 since 2014 based on recommendations from the developmental education redesign workgroup. The course was created to provide a shortened, more appropriate path for students to take MTH 105 and earn an Associate of Arts Transfer degree. Some institutions, such as Clackamas Community College, include the added benefit of allowing for MTH 105 to serve as a prerequisite to MTH 243, extending the pathway for students.

Their goal is to create materials that:

- Are learner-centered
- Readily integrate group work and collaboration
- Create opportunities for students to make critical thinking a habit of mind
- Acknowledge and respect common anxieties, personalities, and professional goals of students in the “alternate pathway”.

Visit their public MTH 098 course on MyOpenMath to learn more.

In this second part of Volume 2 we focus on the meaning of the word 'misconceptions'and compare it to the general understanding of the meaning of 'errors' and 'mistakes'. These different words have different concepts associated with them. We tend to use the word 'misconception' indiscriminately when talking to colleagues, and more often than not, we are talking about learner errors or mistakes rather than misconceptions.

In this task students are required to compare numbers that are identified by word names and not just digits. The order of the numbers described in words are intentionally placed in a different order than their base-ten counterparts so that students need to think carefully about the value of the numbers.

There is a non-mathematical fact that students must know about mixtures in order to answer this question. When salt is dissolved in water, the salt disperses evenly through the mixture, so any sample from the mixture that has the same volume will have the same amount of salt.

Unit 1- Counting with Friends
OVERVIEW
In this unit, students will start kindergarten thinking of counting as a string of words, but then make a gradual transition to using counting as a tool for describing their world. They must construct the idea of counting using manipulatives and other resources to see the numbers visually (dot cards, tens frames). To count successfully, students must remember the rote counting sequence, assign one counting number to each object counted, and at the same time have a strategy for keeping track of what has already been
counted and what still needs to be counted. Only the counting sequence is a rote procedure. The meaning students attach to
counting is the key conceptual idea on which all other number concepts are developed. Students will develop successful and meaningful counting strategies as they practice counting and as they listen to and watch others count.
