The mockingjay, a fictional bird in Susan Collin's Hunger Games series, resulted from a genetically engineered bird (jabberjay) breeding with a mockingbird. Is this even possible? Has biological science reached the point where a new living thing could be created?

This lesson provides a first-look at GMOs and the possibilities that GMO technologies are presenting in our world.

Students evaluate the pros and cons to DIY Biology and are guided through reading and two short videos to form an opinion on the issue and provide reasons for their stance. A creative project is also included.
