This lesson introduces principles of small animal health care with research to identify and describe common diseases or parasites, symptoms and causes, treatment, and prevention.

In this lesson, students will practice vocabulary for veterinary suturing, and apply when and where these procedures would be used in animal health care and surgery. Developed by Lynne M. Cook, Tift County High School, Georgia.

Tissues are groups of cells working together. A specific tissue has similar cells which perform a particular function. In this activity we will look at various types of tissue to see how structure is related to function. You will be researching several different types of tissues. For each tissue you will include a description/picture/drawing, list at least one function and list at least one place it is found in the human body. You may use the following charts, or you may record your information in another format of your own design (google slides, etc.). Our PBL project is about zoo habitats! A guest speaker, from the Indianapolis Zoo, is coming to our classroom to give the students an idea about how the zoo works and how the animals live. In preparation for their trip to the zoo, the students will do some research on different animals and their habitats that will see on their visit. After their trip, the students will prepare a presentation on the zoo habitats compared to their habitats in the wild. After their presentation, the students are going to make a book including what they learned and any improvements they have for the zoo. We will send that book to our guest speaker.

"At first glance you would be hard-pressed to tell apart a Eurasian golden jackal from what has been thought to be an African golden jackal. Recent studies, however, suggest these geographically separate populations represent two distinct species. And one of them, it turns out, should be classified as a wolf. 19th century naturalists recorded and named many African mammalian species during their expeditions. Species descriptions were based on observations in the wild and on individuals collected and brought back to European natural history museums. These scientists were often over-zealous, naming more species than are currently recognized. But in the case of the African wolf, these early naturalists had it right. During the early part of the last century, golden jackals found in Eurasia and Africa were lumped into a single species due to similarities in their outward appearance, despite the fact that the early scientist had recognized the African form as a different, wolf-related species..."
