This workshop is designed for biology lab teachers who are not yet using digital photography. My focus will be on the simplest equipment that will do the job, not on the best or latest equipment. I will cover the basics of color and gray scale digital photography, biometry, closeups, and photomicrographs with or without a trinocular head on the microscope. We will make a little time-lapse movie with a still camera. Computers will be garden variety PC's or Macs. For software I will use mainly the freeware Scion/NIH Image. (less)

This chapter of the GLOBE Teacher's Guide provides the measurement protocols for collecting research quality data on land cover and constructing land cover maps using Landsat scenes. K-12 students from all over the world are participating in the GLOBE program by taking environmental measurements at their schools and sharing their data via the Internet. NASA scientists use GLOBE data in their research and provide feedback to the students. The protocols are imbedded in an integrated approach that includes background information and learning activities and that offers teachers an example of an inquiry based research activity. (less)

The learning activities in this teacher’s guide chapter allows students to study annual variations in environmental parameters (the seasons and phenology) by examining the connections among the various phenomena measured in GLOBE on local, regional, and global spatial scales. K-12 students from all over the world are participating in the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program by taking environmental measurements at their schools and sharing their data via the Internet. As students conduct the full range of GLOBE measurements, they should gain a perception that the environment is the result of an interplay among many processes that take place locally, regionally, and globally on time scales ranging from seconds to centuries. Student measurements covered in this chapter include: budburst, green-up, green-down, ruby-throated hummingbird, phenological gardens, lilac phenology, arctic bird migration, and seaweed reproductive phenology. Two learning activities are presented: Seasons and Phenology and Exploring the Connections. (less)
