Mikulas Gaussman: a citizen digitally resourced for the future?

step 1: identify an area for your development

Using the categories below to identify an area for your own development.

  • operational digital literacy: such as being able to use a number of software applications and browsing the internet.
  • cultural digital literacy: such as being able to situate a digital tool/text within its cultural context.
  • critical digital literacy: such as being able to evaluate and select digital tools and texts.

(Lankshear and Nobel, 2006)

step 2: reflection/commentary

Lankshear and Knobel (2006) put forward three sub-categories of digital literacy. What category would you say is a current priority in educational contexts you are familiar with? Do the other categories merit concern? To what extent is digital literacy in all areas affected by age of learners/political systems?
