"Bariatric surgeries like gastric bypass are often used for weight loss, but they can also help protect patients from fatal heart attacks, possibly by altering the levels of gut-derived metabolic hormones like GLP-1, leptin, ghrelin, and insulin, which are known to affect heart tissue, or by acting on heart tissue directly. Researchers recently investigated the mechanisms by performing three common bariatric surgeries on non-obese, non-diabetic rats. Ten weeks later, the researchers subjected the rats to simulated heart attacks by restricting and reestablishing their cardiac blood flow. Both Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, but not ileal transposition surgery, reduced the size of the damaged area in the heart and the no-reflow area to which blood flow couldn’t be restored. Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy also increased GLP-1 and leptin levels, while sleeve gastrectomy reduced ghrelin levels. In contrast, none of the surgeries affected insulin levels..."

"New research suggests that a low-calorie diet might help reverse symptoms of type 2 diabetes in men with obesity. The findings of the study add to a growing body of evidence indicating that diabetes is a reversible condition. Authors of the study looked at 18 men in South Africa who were over the age of 35, had class III obesity, and were on insulin treatment for diabetes. The participants were randomized to one of two groups: one followed a commercially available low-fat, low-calorie diet consisting of vegetables and a vegetable-soup-based meal plan; while the control group received a calorie-restricted meal plan. All participants were encouraged to engage in physical activity according to their abilities and to visit a counseling psychologist at least once a month. Over the course of 6 months, the team tracked the men’s levels of blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin, or HbA1c—using those measures to establish diabetes status..."

"New findings from the ACTIONI-O study suggest that when it comes to tackling weight loss, people with obesity and healthcare professionals don’t always see eye to eye. Reported misconceptions about the factors contributing to obesity and about patient attitudes suggest much room for improving communication and education. In what’s considered the largest study of its type, researchers surveyed more than 14500 people with obesity and more than 2700 healthcare professionals treating patients with obesity in 11 countries. Surveys designed foreach group asked about perceived attitudes, behaviors, and barriers to effective obesity care. For example, patients were asked whether they consider their weight loss completely their responsibility. While clinicians were asked, among other things, to rank criteria they consider in determining whether to spark a discussion with a patient about obesity, such as patient weight, BMI, or mental state..."

Many people exercise and take medicine in order to delay or treat type 2 diabetes. However in most cases these interventions in one’s lifestyle fails and the person regain weight and retain their increasing blood glucose levels. Controlling one’s appetite seems to be the key, which is one of the aspects we’ll discuss in this presentation. Furthermore we’ll discuss how gastric bypass surgery helps people with diabetes type 2 controlling their appetite and make their diabetes disappear. Finally we’ll discuss how hormones such as GLP-1 can help diabetics’ control their appetite, and lose weight.

And those that are available require frequent, daily dosing. Now, a new treatment option tested among patients with diabetes could be a solution for those with obesity but not diabetes. Shown to significantly reduce body weight vs. placebo, efpeglenatide is one of the latest of an entire class of diabetes-targeted drugs observed to have beneficial effects beyond glycemic control. Efpeglenatide is a long-lasting glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, or GLP-1 RA. The drug is currently being developed to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes as a once-weekly subcutaneous administration. "When weight loss attempts fail, people sometimes turn to surgery. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a last-resort treatment that alters gut architecture to cause substantial and sustained weight loss. The surgery alters the intestinal microbiota in the patient, which affects nutrient absorption. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to separate the effects from the surgery from those of the weight loss it causes. In a recent study, researchers used a rat model of gastric bypass to measure the changes in the resident gut microbes. They compared rats after surgery to weight-matched partners that didn’t receive surgery. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metaproteomics revealed that the overall diversity of microbes decreased following surgery. Interestingly, changes varied by location, and the proportion of certain bacteria increased while others decreased. Metabolism-related changes were also seen in the gut microbes, including changes in amino acid and bile acid metabolism..."
