This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. "Our microbiome has profound impacts on our health, and technological advances have allowed for ever-growing pools of data from microbiome-wide studies. This means that our microbiome could be used to estimate disease risk, but the nature of the data makes the endeavor difficult. Similar issues with using genetics to predict disease risk led to the development of the polygenic risk score. Motivated by the success of that framework, a team of researchers recently developed the microbial risk score (MRS). MRS summarizes the complex microbial profile by first identifying a sub- community consisting of disease-associated microbial taxa and then integrating those microbial taxa into a continuous score based on the alpha diversity of the identified sub-community. MRS can be easily integrated with the other risk scores built upon metatranscriptomics, host genetics, or host transcriptomics, making it useful for 'multi-omics' approaches as well..."
